Why hasn’t Capcom rereleased the original Resident Evils 1, 2, and 3 on modern consoles and PC?

1 : Anonymous2022/02/06 20:27 ID: sm6ltx

The remakes have been awesome but I would like the original 90s resident evils to get a rerelease on places like PC or on consoles. They’ve made trilogy packs on switch and released RE 0 and 1 together on switch, so can’t we have the originals?

2 : Anonymous2022/02/06 20:50 ID: hvuvm5a

Weird as hell, right? It would be neat if they had official support for the amazing Seamless HD Project.

You can't buy them, but thankfully the old PC releases are abandonware at this point so you can obtain them from sites like archive.org and patch them so they work better than ever.

The only one you can't get is CODE:Veronica, but thankfully it's been ported to several consoles with fairly solid emulators.

They pretty much consider the remakes to replace the originals. REmake came out twenty years ago and not once have you been able to play that and RE1 on the same system, and that’s unlikely to change.

I half blame the fans for this one; who say that REmake has replaced/superseded the original

Technically no remake has taken the place of the originals in canon. But whenever a new remake comes out, that tends to be the face of the old games, which is definitely a Capcom thing as well.

For instance, look at how the promotional artwork of Jill and Chris for Deadly Silence is heavily inspired by the remake despite being a port of the original. Or how most guidebooks use remake or Umbrella Chronicles assets to represent the events of 1. Same with 3. RE2 and CODE:Veronica received the same treatment following Darkside Chronicles, and now again following the recent remakes. Hell, for the 25th anniversary, Capcom didn't even do anything for RE1.

I completely agree! When I see something to the effect of “RE1 is obsolete,” it really disappoints me because it seems Capcom has agreed. I also don’t understand how so-called RE fans can feel this way about the one that started it all.

REmake wasn't the problem. The fans being ok with the re2 and r3make were the problem.

Both were on PS3, but didn't they stop supporting PS1 titles on PS4 and 5?

ID: hvv4qke

I didn’t actually realize that REmake was ported to PS3 too, thought they skipped that and started with PS4.

At any rate I think the trend is that Capcom’s pretty bad at making original games available once they remake them. There’s only been I think two ports of RE1 since REmake came out, and they were both for systems that you at least initially couldn’t get REmake on.

Yes.

The reasoning was that the architecture of the PS4 made it impossible to be backwards compatible with PS1-PS3 games. Now as to why you can download the digital copies from the store, idk. Maybe that's just their push to get you to sub to PSNow

Both the OG and the REmake can be played on PS3

I don't know, but it's frustrating. It makes perfect sense to release a Classic Collection including 4 games:

-Resident Evil --Including both the original PS1 release and the Direct's Cut (and possibly even an option for the Dual Shock Edition soundtrack).

-Resident Evil 2--Including the editions made to the later PS1 and N64 releases (including Extreme Battle, EX Files, blood color, Nightmare Difficulty, etc.)

-Resident Evil 3: Nemesis--Including all costumes from the PC vesion

-Code: Veronica-- including both the Dreamcast original as well as the X Version--preferably the HD Remaster.

Special Features/Updates:

-Door animation and Cutscene skips

-Speedrun timer in the pause menu (which also paused the timer)

-Soundtracks, promotional material, concept art, etc.

-Achievements for each game

-Boss rush/challenge modes for each game

See like strictly for me? I wouldn’t even need the extra stuff. Just give me straight PS1 Ports to modern day consoles. I’d pay $25-30 for a bundled trilogy. This seems like such an easy decision and they refuse to do it

I’m convinced at this point that Capcom kinda wants people to forget about the originals and have the Remakes make up the new cannon. They’ve said that “all” of the games are cannon… ok that’s fine… you have a choose your own adventure of sorts… well then if that is true, why don’t you let new school players play the OG trilogy on modern consoles to see what adventure they want…? Makes no sense to me

7 : Anonymous2022/02/06 21:30 ID: hvv1fbh

Because they hate money

8 : Anonymous2022/02/06 21:38 ID: hvv2mtv

I'd pay full price for it, up to $60, especially if it was a great remaste

with 16:9 pan & scan like the Origins collection got. They could even throw in features from the Saturn and DS versions, alternate soundtracks, lost concept art, new interviews with the original casts, etc.

You'll buy it for a high price

Hehehe, thank you!

i think the remakes were also a huge missed opportunity, would have love for them to do like the mediEvil remake that included the original game it would have been a nice extra to add in the games but alas they didnt :(.

10 : Anonymous2022/02/06 21:55 ID: hvv582f

It’s about whether they think it will turn a profit. When releasing anything they want it to attract new fans as well as current ones to maximise profit, REmake and 0 made sense because anyone can look at them and think they look amazing, it’s a more niche crowd that are attracted to the 90s PSX look of the original three games.

I would love for them to be made available in their original forms, faithfully reconstructed for newer hardware with un-compressed backgrounds, but it might not be a priority for Capcom right now with the success of the RE engine games

11 : Anonymous2022/02/06 22:16 ID: hvv87pq

I'm just lucky I have a dreamcast and og re2

12 : Anonymous2022/02/06 22:43 ID: hvvc2f4

You can still buy them on PS3

13 : Anonymous2022/02/06 23:13 ID: hvvgby9

They definitely should especially with some texture upscaling, no remodeling needed just nicer backgrounds and better paint and they'd sale like crazy

14 : Anonymous2022/02/06 23:43 ID: hvvkj26

They probably anticipate the work required isn't worth the return. They'd all need to be ported to a new engine for release on modern consoles. They'd almost certainly need fresh agreements on things like the music and whatnot. I'd personally love to see them all available again, but I just can't see it ever happening. On the plus side, they're all very easy to play via emulation, and with some of the fan made texture packs for them, you can have a really good experience on PC

15 : Anonymous2022/02/06 23:48 ID: hvvl74s

Well, they did release 1, 2 and 3 originals on PS3 at least. I bought and downloaded them all. But I don't think they sold that well, so doubt they'd bother trying again.

16 : Anonymous2022/02/06 23:49 ID: hvvl92i

Considering the amount of "retro collections" floating around now, it's just increasingly weird of Capcom to not hop on the trend and put them out there at least digitally to Steam and on the Switch.

17 : Anonymous2022/02/06 21:25 ID: hvv0onw

they don't sell that good anymore

Square-Enix and Konami are making good money with the classics Final Fantasy and Castlevania games...
