What the hell happened to the left I remember? Even early 2000s left wingers, back when I identifed myself as being of one political stripe, were not anywhere near the authoritarians the current woke left are.
They only protest what they're told to by the media. Otherwise, they tend to shame you for questioning authority and the experts. They're worse bootlickers than George W Bush supporters.
I miss when the counterculture was celebrated and authentic and not simply some artificial tool of the establishment.

The 'left' is two different factions:
Neoliberals ProgressivesThe two factions actually don't have much in common, especially on economic issues. For example:
Healthcare Neoliberals: Implemented Obamacare, would have also been called RomneyCare, which centers around private insurance Progressives: Want Medicare For All, single payer healthcare like basically every developed nation on Earth War Neoliberals: Want to continue the wars, for "security" and "defense" (of our allies?) Progressives: Want to end the wars Minimum wage: Neoliberals: Biden and the Centrists/neoliberals forced out $15 minimum wage Progressives: Support $15+ minimum wage Pardons: Neoliberals: Hate Ass@nge, Snowden, etc., want to see them extradited and locked up for life Progressives: Want pardons for Snowden, etc.The list goes on. So when you question what happened to the left that was part of the civil rights movement, that was a part of Occupy Wallstreet, etc., those are the "Progressives". The Neoliberals have co-opted the movement because their leaders could read the political winds and see that progressivism was on the rise, so are trying to ride the wave of that movement, especially on cultural issues like BLM or LGBTQ issues because that doesn't piss off the rich elite donors as much. You know, Hillary Clinton types opposed gay marriage until I think about just 10 years ago, which was a part of the signaling of the establishment they want to co-opt the progressive movement, as they correctly predicted that progressives like 2016 Sanders would get huge support. But Bernie Sanders was part of the Civil Rights movement, and progressives who support him were the ones at Occupy Wallstreet protests. And yes, *disclaimer* Bernie Sanders has now sold out following his 2020 defeat in the rigged primaries, but still doesn't mean that his supporters who we are talking about are guilty for his actions, in fact on the left there is a lot of resentment towards Sanders for kissing the ring of Biden
TLDR; the "[establishment] bootlickers [that are worse] than George W Bush supporters." are the neoliberals who have co-opt'd progressives on the left
So one could either say "you fell for the bait, that made you think progressives = neoliberals", or they could say "the progressives allowed this co-opt'ing to happen, to make people like you think "progressives = neoliberals", when they are so opposite on so many issues, and what you are describing are the neoliberals, but ascribing to the 'left', which colloquially would include progressives. Make sense?

That is why I loved Trump (or at least the bullshit narrative he sold) he was a registered Democrat early in life, a friend of JFK Jnr, a libertarian and he hated the MSM. The left has departed from being the resistance. They have morphed into the status quo sheep. The sheep used to be the middle of both sides now the sheep is the center and all of the left.
