- Are games becoming too pretty? I'm worried real life will not much longer be appealing.

What do you mean “much longer”? It’s already incredibly unappealing
ID: h3q0923ID: h3q0d6oThey’re lying to you. There’s nothing but disappointment. Video games won’t leave you.

I mean, if your eyes are the only sense you use, maybe.
ID: h3q1dh2newest game feature: "you can now experience the TRUE smell of death in the new FPS Slaughterhouse 2: The Slaughtening! Only compatible with EA-propietary smell add-on service, now only 20.00 a month!"
ID: h3qb37uAhh yes, the smell of a rotting corpse. Where do I sign up!
ID: h3qde0zTo be honest though. Having the ability to smell the petrichor scent during/after a rain storm in a game would be pretty cool.
ID: h3qpox6The best part is that someone actually tried doing this. Stuff like smelling the grass when you go prone and stuff like that, but nothing came from the idea, since it's not really the most convenient thing to buy tiny air refreshers evey now and then for a tiny dose of immersion in a game.
ID: h3q575oBut if we manage to get that kind of graphics in VR the only thing left would be smelling stuff and touching it
ID: h3qj75pBrain to machine Interfaces are not that far out, give it about ten years and you will be full diving into the game of you choice.
ID: h3qr9aePersonally great sound design and an amazing soundtrack is waaaaaay more memorable than stunning visuals

I can’t throw fireballs, I never see bunny girls, the real world already sucks.
ID: h3qjcfhI mean you can always break into the play boy mansion with a pocket flame thrower.
ID: h3qjkg9I’ll never get away with that a second time.
ID: h3qpyawTwo words: lucid dreaming

There are things in this world no digital rendering could ever come close to out-appealing. You might just need to get out a little more
ID: h3qjuttGive it about ten years or so brain to machine Interfaces.
At which point a developer make an object feel taste and smell however you like.

Never. Real life will always win. Nothing will ever be more appealing than hugging someone you love, or seing or friends after a long time; petting your dog, watching a movie on the cinema. Reality beats every ray tracing always.
ID: h3q8mdoI can't maintain relationships or hold a job so most of that is out of the picture already.

I was wondering this the other day, as games get closer and closer to being photorealistic, what does that mean for videogame violence? War games with heavy photorealistic combat, games like GTA with photorealistic massacres, games like Mortal Kombat with photorealistic hyperviolence. They will have trouble getting rated at a certain point.
So I think many games will actually turn away from this and lean back into stylisation a little bit as graphics continue to improve.
ID: h3qki7fMost likely photo realism is and always has been expensive to produce, sure better tools for modeling people, buildings and random objects now exist.
But like it's easy to make low poly cartoony models and give it unique shading then it is to model and paint individual poor's and lines of fabric.
-
Sometimes I wonder about it too. On real life there are restrictions. It can be the money necessary to do something, or nature itself, as an example, gravity.
On games they can do whatever they want, the only restriction is the imagination. A huge floating city? No problem. A submarine city? No problem too.
Even nature can be whatever you want. A mountain with a different shape that makes it unique and beautiful? Again, no problem. Floating mountains like Avatar? You' already know the answer...
On games you're not tied to real places so it can be as beautiful as someone can imagine it.
-
Spoiler alert: life isn’t appealing. Never had been.
-
Is that the new raytraced minecraft?
-
Pros of Control: Looks pretty, can fly and posses telekinetic powers
Cons of Control: Most things actively try to kill you.
On net, I prefer living in my safe normal world without superpowers.
-
Right. There is no DLSS to give us more fps in real life.
-
I like AAA games being either realistic or hyper realistic.
Yes it's ugly af BUT... It makes indie games look so much better by comparison. Lol Watching big games in their constant greys and browns then seeing something like Replaced or Vokabulantis... ah so pretty!
-
I'm not a fan of the real world, even though its done me no wrong personally. But when we live in a world with such pathetic conflicts and dick measuring. I don't even think games need to be pretty, they just need to do wha they do well. Games are a great escape! I love sinking 60 hours into a game(all games). 300+ hours(skyrim +valheim). Or even that game I put 13k(runescape) hours into, before getting permanently banned.
-
Yea, only with the cost of games like cyberpunk taking 200 gigabytes
-
Oooh, nice a new GCJ title
-
Well, soon we’ll be moving into them full time so don’t worry!
-
Games were never meant to be realistic. The best games are games that look like games, especially retro games. Almost all “4k ultra hd raytraced” games (and other terms i hardly understand) are just games that make me say “hmm, looks neat” and thats it. The game industry often heavily loses focus on making games with fun and unique gameplay and ends up making 3d movies that look good but play disappointingly
ID: h3q9564There are some games I would agree with you on, but Control isn’t one of them; it’s both gorgeous and incredibly fun.

I know 🙁 But they keep telling me I need to take part in it.
