My favorite as someone whose been around since the 90s is honestly the newest ones - RE2 & 3 Remake (loved them both - amazing, even with 3's shorter length) and Village.

Really loving where this franchise is going!

Oddly my former favorite was 6...but after revisiting it post Remakes/Village, I hate it lol.

ID: h3pz5cr

6 would have been better if shake and jerry's campaign was like one hour lol.

ID: h3q8cjj

Shake and Jerry. Lol

ID: h3qhj8m

I actually liked Wesker Junior and his campaign had a lot of great moments. Many of the bosses came back too many times, but that’s just hardcore Japenesque action, horror or not.

ID: h3qf8rd

Who are Shake and Jerry?

ID: h3q2f5s

I consider it fun for co op, killing stuff and all that but as far as story and enemy choices goes, I dont like it. Leon has the best campaign out of all 4.

ID: h3ql53h

See I think the name is what does it in the most. Make it a resident evil spin off or slap whatever generic action game title on it and it’s not to bad. But call it resident evil and it doesn’t meet the expectations.

3 : Anonymous2021/07/01 20:21 ID: h3q28c8

I think that Outbreak was way ahead of its time and because of that suffered. I think that given how big the MP gaming is now, a game like Outbreak could potentially be awesome.
Yes I know that RE Verse is coming and all that but still a game about co op like Outbreak was could be even better IMO.

ID: h3q9i87

Every single year I'm just here shouting DO OUTBREAK AGAIN! IT'LL SUPER WORK THIS TIME!

ID: h3q9ux6

exactly.

4 : Anonymous2021/07/01 20:19 ID: h3q1xpc

I approve of this, except I'd argue that 5 should be where 3 remake is

ID: h3q2als

That was the initial configuration.

ID: h3q38dk

Oh my bad, I didn't read that part

5 : Anonymous2021/07/01 21:29 ID: h3qbk4h

I love RE6 and ofcourse RE4 is always top on my list.

6 : Anonymous2021/07/01 21:23 ID: h3qat5u

My personal favourites are re 7 and village love the new direction of the games. Also Re3 remake because the sandwich is my favourite character in the franchise.

7 : Anonymous2021/07/01 20:31 ID: h3q3mdu

Man I enjoyed Zero wonder what people didn’t like

ID: h3q3wwt

For most people, it is a combination of settings, enemy designs, partner zapping, and the inventory system. Others may not see these as problematic, or they may like the features.

ID: h3q40oq

Ohhh gotcha thanks for informing me pal

ID: h3qh5zc

The hookshot takes two inventory slots. In a game with no item boxes. And only six inventory slots.

I accounted for ratings, critical reviews, and the perception of fans on forums in order to determine their reception. Keep in mind that the scale is not linear; it is more like a grid of 9, and these games if plotted would have fallen would have fallen into their respective boxes. So, re4 is not as much action as re6, but they both skew that way. Likewise, re0 was not as disliked as re6, but every box had to be filled. It is the horror title that has the most shit said about it, so the reception scale is sort of contextualised with the genre scale.

5 could go where 3 remake is, but I wanted to give it more depth than that. 3r was initially where outbreak is, but that puts it in the same genre corridor as 2r. Bottom centre was the hardest box to fill by far.

7's placement is mostly because it was a polarising second soft reboot, and many people hated the setting , characters, and camera scheme. It is more positively acclaimed than 3r and rev2.

4, 6, and REmake were the most obvious calls to make.

This does not necessarily represent my beliefs on how good or bad these games are btw. My rating differs a bit. 0 kinda got gypped in this format; sorry 0.

I do not want to discourage people from playing the games in the bottom row, nor ignoring the ones that didn't appear (1-3 original, 5, 8.) That is far from the intention of this post.

And before someone asks, "why is 2make not pure horror?", there was a simple determination for that. Make enemies less spongey, and it is a nonlinear action game, with survival horror elements. Do that with REmake, 7, and 0; they are still horror games. Those three are atmospheric; 2make is panicked. Slow burn dread versus mechanical scarcity.

I tend to automatically upvote anything reinforcing the point that RE6 is total shit, but this is a legit quality post too. Great job, and I really appreciate your explanation of the methodology! Seems pretty accurate, particularly in the corners.

9 : Anonymous2021/07/01 20:56 ID: h3q749b

6 still somehow made the (second) most money

Edit: correction

ID: h3q7hao

It sold the second most and cost more because it had so much content. 6 was very expensive to make. 5, the bestseller, was possibly the most profitable. then again there was that steam glitch, so depending on how widespread that price exploit was , it may be 4.

ID: h3q7ygm

Thanks. Did not take post launch into consideration

10 : Anonymous2021/07/01 21:43 ID: h3qdeve

Is 0 poorly received because no item box? Def one of my fav’s, no item box is a bit annoying imo but ads to the variety it provides

Also, why outbreak files 2? I enjoyed the first one, don’t believe I have played the second. Any reason this one wasn’t received well?

ID: h3qh73z

RE0 is actually a well received game. It has 83 score in metacritic on the original version.

ID: h3qfqss

Probably weak online servers. It has a 58 on metacritic, to file 1's 71

11 : Anonymous2021/07/01 20:35 ID: h3q46bz

My big problem around 0 is that it forces you to leave all your shit through the floor

12 : Anonymous2021/07/01 21:38 ID: h3qcquf

Remake 2, RE Village and RE1 are easily my top ones

Much prefer RE when it leans into horror. I enjoyed Village a surprising amount after being let down by 7 as it went along.

My issue with 7 is once you’re past the second fight with Jack and the chainsaw duel, things really start to just get a bit more meh. Village kept the stakes rising non stop, plus a huge hub was a fantastic choice, and one that continues to evolve as time passes.

2 Remake is absolutely fantastic in every way and was in my top 3 of last gen.

And 1 remains an obvious classic.

Of the ones listed, swap Village for 4 and you have it

13 : Anonymous2021/07/01 22:11 ID: h3qh208

I suck. I love 6, outbreak and zero lol

14 : Anonymous2021/07/01 22:12 ID: h3qh87k

Every resident evil is a good resident evil! (For me at least )

15 : Anonymous2021/07/01 22:54 ID: h3qmhqs

RE6 isn't the best resident evil game and it's got some flaws but its a quality 3rd person shooter I love the mechanics and controls it had brilliant multiplayer modes and a fully co op replayable campaign. It's so unfortunate people used to take game reviewers word's as gospel and just bandwagoned on the hatred towards it. Play RE6 again without thinking of it as a resident evil game and I assure you your opinion of it will change.

ID: h3qnlhc

Agree it's well overhated

16 : Anonymous2021/07/01 20:53 ID: h3q6o0b

I love RE0 and don’t understand the dislike

ID: h3qjdpg

I'm a massive RE fan, been playing since '98, and love the old style.

But even I had to give up halfway through 0. Extremely limited healing items, respawning and persistent enemies in environments too narrow to avoid them, very tanky bullet sponge non-zombie enemies, repeated backtracking (with both characters separately) for minor item or unlock management, without question the worst storyline and villains from the series.

0 did everything on paper that made Remake 1 so great, but without any of the balance or intricacy that Remake 1 did so well. It just feels like a bad Remake 1.

17 : Anonymous2021/07/01 19:46 ID: h3pxa1a

Where do you think RE8 would place?

ID: h3pxqb7

I thought about including that in the big comment, but it's a little harder to say with the game being new. Probably between revelations 2 and 2make for the first half; between 4 and 3make for the second half.

ID: h3q7v7m

I'm curious about your thoughts on the reception. Critics seem to roughly score it similar to 7, but the fan reception seems notably higher then 7. At least from what I've seen.

18 : Anonymous2021/07/01 20:43 ID: h3q5doz

How long is RE Remake to play?

ID: h3q6knu

About 15-20 hours the first time, but subsequent playthroughs can be much shorter.

19 : Anonymous2021/07/01 21:14 ID: h3q9jbp

Code Veronica X, 6, and Outbreak 1 & 2 will always be my favorites.

20 : Anonymous2021/07/01 19:37 ID: h3pw2fq

I completely agree with this. RE1, RE2, and RE4 are my favorites, both Original and Remake of RE2.

ID: h3pw8pk

Top row is a pretty solid selection tbh.

21 : Anonymous2021/07/01 21:18 ID: h3qa39z

I loved the Outbreak games. They need to be remade!

ID: h3qabfu

I don't know why capcom keeps trying to invent new mmo shooters when outbreak 3/outbreak remakes is by far the most popular request.

ID: h3qaj9i

Indeed! Outbreak was ahead of its time and was a fun game when played with serious players. Capcom just needs to remake them or do part 3 just like you said.

22 : Anonymous2021/07/01 21:34 ID: h3qc8lj

I loved RE0 even though i have zero recollection of its plot

23 : Anonymous2021/07/01 21:47 ID: h3qdz7d

0 is so under rated

ID: h3qfve6

I would agree that it is probably overhated tbh.
