I just finished playing the RE Remake, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Code Veronica, all on Gamecube. I loved pretty much all of them.
What is the community recommendation for me to tackle next? Resident Evil 4 or Zero?
On one hand playing Zero would make me finish all the classic style ones, but I’ve been told that it’s not really very interesting plot and gameplay wise.
What do you guys recommend? Thanks!

I'd say play Zero first. RE 4 is more action focused and arguably the best in the series. So save the best for last!

I'd recommend checking out Zero first if you enjoyed REmake etc. Resident Evil 4 after gets my vote.
ID: h5b3cb3Remake was my absolute favorite so far. Perfect atmosphere and gameplay! Can’t believe I took this long to play this series!

Yes and Yes

I suggest you play RE4 and Zero

Play 4 , zero is a pain still fun but a pain none the less. Where as 4 is one of the best games ever made
-
Resident evil outbreak lol

Zero is not great, so here’s my rec:
If you’re still super into the series and want to be a completionist, give Zero a shot. The opening train section is good and there are a few good environments and puzzles that use the character switching. If you don’t like it, stop and move on.
If there’s ANY risk you might burn out after one more game, skip it and play 4.
Zero isn’t horrible, but the enemy design is uninspired, the plot isn’t very interesting, and the lack of item boxes is just, such an enormous pain in the ass.
ID: h5buf85The idea of the progenitor virus coming from leeches, and leeches merging together to create a humanoid zombie creature as well as your typical zombies = uninspired.
But generic villagers with heads that bursts into tantacles is not?
Man I swear the shitty RE4 (which was literally the downfall of this franchise) is wayyyyyyy too overrated and praised on this sub/in the casul RE fanbase in general. 4-5-6 will always be hot garbage that doesnt belong in this franchise at all.
ID: h5bx584I actually liked the leech monsters as enemies. They were challenging, it always felt very intense when one would suddenly appear.
I was less impressed by:
-giant centipede
-giant cockroaches
-giant bat
-giant scorpion
-zombie orangutans
Et cetera. Like they’d run out of cool ideas for monster designs and just went to the zoo to get ideas.
It’s cool if you like the plot, but I personally consider “leeches merging into a humanoid form” jumping the shark. Without going into spoilers, I found everything to do with the villain a little too “bad animé plot” for my taste.
From a game design perspective, villagers with tentacles that pop out of their heads actually is somewhat inspired because for most of the franchise, you’ve gotten used to headshots being the most reliable method to take out mobs, but in 4 that can just make them more dangerous.
I definitely understand why you would dislike 4 if you wish they had always remained true survival horror, or if you hated having to escort Ashley, and it’s fair to argue that 4 is overrated now due to how influential it was at the time, but that doesn’t make 4 “a shitty game,” and to act like 4-6 are all the same quality is obviously disingenuous.
The funny thing about your strangely hostile comment is that if someone only read what you replied, they would think I was ranting about how much Zero sucks and how OP should auto-skip it to play the incredible 4, but I actually suggested OP give Zero a shot before moving on to 4, and I didn’t even comment on my feelings toward 4 beyond the implication that I think it’s better than Zero.

The answer is always RE4
ID: h5b31nvLol
ID: h5bkjf6Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece indeed but there is something to be said for saving the best for last!
-
Tbh, RE4 is a better game, but as you have only played the classics so far, I'd clock Zero before you move on, as the gameplay changes in RE4 and beyond. Be prepared for a hard game though. If you play it on easy then Zero is a doddle, but normal or above it quite challenging.
Good luck!

0 is easily the worst RE game out there. Just skip it.
ID: h5b30yvI read that there are no item boxes… that scares me a bit, more than any tyrant LOL
ID: h5behvjI mean it is a bit of a pain in the ass the manage items between the two characters but you can always drop items and pick them up later so it's not that bad as people will make you believe.

I think everyone's going to say RE4, and I do love that game, but I'd go with RE0 next. The story branches off in RE4, while RE0 still contributes to the Umbrella plotline.

Why is there an "or" in this?
-
Resident EVIL… FOUR!
-
0 is kind of an all around worse version of remake, but 4 is a completely different kind of game altogether. I say this with 4 being my favourite; it's not surprising when fans of the original formula are disappointed by it.
It's better than 0 though lol. If you're playing 0 no matter what it would make sense to do so now with the rest of the classics, to see where the RE formula went.. experimental..

If you could only play one 4 is way better by a long shot. Zero has its moments and has the classic feel but also has a lot of unnecessary annoyances.

I guess that could be a more natural progression, playing in release order and seeing the series gameplay change
