- A Japanese man holding his newly acquired ps2 in the launching at Japan. March 2 2000
-
Google says launch titles in Japan were Ridge Racer V, Street Fighter EX3, Kessen, Eternal Ring, A Train 6 and Mahjong Takai III
If memory serves Kessen had lots of horses.
I would have gone for Ridge Racer
ID: hkzui5bID: hkzyp1hPlayed that on the PC ages ago. I remember having fun with it but I don’t remember it super well tbh.
ID: hl02igrOni is a hidden Gem. I loved it when i was a kid.
Games like Oni need a reboot with better Graphics only , change my mind .
ID: hkzs0dkI had RRV along with Tekken Tag Team, and SSX when I got mine for Christmas.
ID: hkzwplvRidge Racer V
"It's Ridge Racer"
ID: hkzydjyFucking Kesssssen! Loved it. I reckon no one else outside of Japan played it lol
ID: hl00u37I think it got a few sequels as I recall. Never played it myself, looks like Dynasty Warriors with extra horse.

My ex worked for a game dev in 2000 who gifted all its employees a PS2 for Christmas. I’ll never forget playing SSX (Tricky!) with the wired controllers, and asking him if the controllers would ever be wireless. He was SO confident when he said it would never be possible, yet here we are. We are both old now, and he is still stupid.
ID: hkz6cmzLol. Atari made wireless controllers for the 2600. Nintendo did for the NES. Must have felt like a moron when the WaveBird was released a year or two later.
ID: hl01xh6That wavebird was the first wireless that really worked perfectly. I had some Xbox one a year or so before that but it was pretty janky.
ID: hkyynonI remember when I first saw Soul Edge on the PS1. My instant reaction was that this is the peak of game's graphics. It's impossible to look something better than this. Stupid kid.
ID: hkzh4ztI thought the same thing about the original mortal Kombat games when they were new. After all, they used pictures of real actors rather than hand drawn sprites in the game so how could graphics ever look more realistic?
ID: hkzt2ynIt's funny, I was just talking to a friend about something similar. I used to play a lot of the Tony Hawk games. Recently when the remakes came out and they showed the trailers and in my mind I was like "yeah looks a bit better, but that's pretty much how I remember it." Then I went back and watched YouTube videos of the originals and they look like absolute crap in comparison. It's funny how your mind just fills in the details.
ID: hkzq9k7I still think this after every new console release
ID: hkzqwemI remember at the time people were very concerned about the latency on wireless controllers, and I think that many of the wireless controllers released up to that point we're proven to have a much higher latency than the wired controllers. Kind of the same as how only recently did wireless gaming mice start becoming more popular.
Of course that's been solved now and we never looked back.
ID: hkzrkujI remember getting a PS2 for that Christmas of 2000. My grandfather had sent it near the beginning of December and it sat alone under the tree forever until Christmas morning. It was also the last to get opened. I was floored that one I had one as I didn’t even bother asking for it (too expensive) and two that my grandfather was so ducking awesome (considering my family dynamics). It came with SSX, Tekken Tag Team, and Ridge Racer V. One of the greatest consoles ever.
ID: hkzh8y9I remember playing SSX Tricky when I used to go to my local youth club, such good memories!
ID: hl09z6rSSX Tricky is my favorite ps2 game ever
ID: hkzizqwI remember when I got the wireless logitech PS2 controllers for Christmas. Game changer, a 3rd party controller back then was usually worse than the factory controller, but the Logitech was better in every way from comfort to function. It was one of the first controllers to use RF instead of IR for wireless controllers too iirc. Can't remember if it beat the wavebird to market that did the same thing.

Can we all just appreciate how well that packaging design has aged? You could release a new console in something like that and it wouldnt look out of place.
ID: hkzsswlMirror the 2 AND BAM! you got 5.
ID: hkzud0dShiiiiiiiiiiit, Sony hire this man!
ID: hkzw2n3That’s a great idea for if the PS5 is ever actually released! This last year of trolling on the internet with people claiming they bought one somehow has gone on long enough.
-
Back when you could actually buy consoles
ID: hkz3uytYou can still buy consoles today, just have to sell a Kidney or two.
: (
ID: hkztpr7In 2000 the PS2 was $299 USD. That's about $480 USD today using an inflation calculator. The PS5 price is $499. So not far off.
ID: hkzh6mhOr your first born
ID: hkzo0sxPS2s were incredibly hard to come by when they first came out. Sony produced only about 500,000 for the U.S. launch. From October through Christmas, it was difficult to find one. After that, though... well, yeah, it was nothing like what it is now.
-
Jeez that’s nostalgic. Can’t remember when and how we got ours.
-
I wonder where this guy is now…
ID: hkzx2b8Came here to say this. It really makes you wonder. He’s probably in his late 40s and has no idea redditors in America are looking at a picture of him right now.
-
Best console i ever had is PS2, it still work till this day. Even if i only play PC now, the PS2 hold a very special place for me.
ID: hkzr7b1Wish mine was that lucky. Had to replace laser head 3 times. On the flip side my Dreamcast is still trucking on. Tenacious little machine.
ID: hkzt49bAside from the classic red rings on my Xbox 360, only one that ever went bad was my GameCube. The disk tray wouldn’t shut right after a few years. Would work if I put a heavy textbook on top of it, otherwise the game refused to start.
-
Remember when you could just walk in the store, and like buy the console? Crazy times huh?
ID: hkzt60eBack then they used to produce more than 10 of them at once.
ID: hl003bdAhhhh. You mean back before there was a Global microchip shortage?
-
Damn... i feel old
-
Dope, that was me but in the states, a "grown man" picking up his console. I loved the ps2, when they came out with the hdd bundle for FFXI I was all in. Had some really good release games and it just got better. Good times.
ID: hkzpi69Dude, installing and playing that was so exciting. Playing a final fantasy, online with other people, just amazing
-
Damn. I was 17 in 2000, when I was 17 I drank a very good beer...
-
I thought I see Ichiban in the background.
-
What a great time this was …
-
Those were some exciting times. I remember getting a PS2 for christmas. the whole industry still felt magical and mysterious. you got an inside but filtered look through magazines. The internet (the web) was still young and social media/networks weren't a thing yet. Getting playstation demos in the mail...man it was so cool.

True happiness

At Japan.
-
Wow the PlayStation came out in the year 2000?! The Nintendo 64 was still in its prime
-
I can tell it's from 2000 from the carbon dating of the pixels in that jpeg
-
just flip that 2 around and say it was taken yesterday
