- Can someone please explain Rinoa’s face and why they need to remake it for each game?
-
1: Rinoa 2: Michael Jackson 3: Tifa
ID: hupm0fcShamona*ID: huq0qmtI see a brown eyed Yuna in 3.
ID: hupq6n5Although I do love Rinoa l, thats not too far off.
ID: hur7gwa3 is way more of a Yuna than a Tifa
ID: hupmaxmSpot on!
ID: huq2rnjNailed it.
ID: huq4sakYou made my morning. This is the correct answer lol

I honestly don’t get it either. Top is my fav for the classic. Bottom is gorgeous and the middle… yeah I don’t see why they change it up. Different artist, different taste.
ID: huplp88Middle one HAS to be a Michael Jackson tribute, right?
ID: hupx2x5the bottom version just looks like Yuna.
ID: huplxo7She looks like she was going through some rough times in the middle.... like her and Scarface broke up awhile back and she had some kids and got hard-core into drugs but recovered then saw Squall in the grocery and tried to catch up
ID: hupeombAlso include the type of tech each team was using as well.
ID: huphig5Oh yes, the classics always the best. And I do agree with you that the bottom one is beautiful

I just binged 7-10 and realized all have a chick with basically the same look with kinda different clothes
ID: huqj547That's Nomura for you (for the most part)
ID: hur7jv1It's always made me a little uncomfortable that the love interest in all of these games looks the same. It's like when your friend breaks up with his girlfriend and then gets together with a different girl who looks the same.
Anyway, in honor of that, I tried to make my FF14 character look like "a nomura girl" to feel more like I'm playing final fantasy

2nd one is the most off-putting one, other two seem fine.
ID: huprxrdThe 2nd is uncanny to me. Don't know why
-
A lot of characters looked really off in dissidia nt
ID: huqjwbaYeah, yshtola was the one that stood out the most. The ears were all wrong.
-
No idea. For some reason, they have trouble making Rinoa's face look good with modern graphics. It's the same in FF8 Remastered. It's the same with a lot of fanart that tries to do a realistic take too. She doesn't look like Rinoa anymore.
I think the bottom one (Brave Exvius) is the closest since the original but still not quite there. At least they got her eye shape right. Dissidia NT is the worst one though. During FF8's movies, Rinoa looks Asian and Dissidia NT and FF8 Remastered make her look white.
ID: huqi55mits as though every time anyone tries to see her face its distorted

Rinoa more than any other character was Asian.
Nomura on particular really loves fusing Japanese+American traits. If you want this in proof, look at "Aya Brea" in Parasite Eve. She's an American but half Japanese. Blue eyes, blonde hair, literally put Clouds body on her and boom, Cloud. This is especially noticeable in FF7R where there are moments Cloud looks particularly white/Caucasian, but his face textures and eye sockets will have some Asian influences, but never comes off as just asian with dyed hair or wearing contacts. I feel the same issue looking at Rufus or President Shinra, moments where they look like a stereotypical depiction of an anime white guy, but moments where the Japanese mocap/modeling shines through and I feel like I'm watching a Yakuza performance.
Before somebody states it has to be this way, it's a deliberate choice. Capcom has no avoidance from seeking out face models and western mocap teams for its DMC/RE games, but Square really loves doing all its FF stuff in house. I think in part the "hardcore" Japanese FF fans are a weird bunch. It was a super minority, but when Aerith was revealed, there was this rejection by some of those fans because she wasn't "cute" enough. Probably wanting her to look more like a Japanese-Virtual Idol than a real characte
. Bear in mind the most "passionate" Japanese fans like any fanbase tend to be hostile at the end of the iceberg (see threats against Nojima if he makes CloudxTifa canon)Simply put: Square is overly cautious how "anime" vs "real" characters come off as. They've seemingly settled on "everybody is either purely Asian or half Asian" aesthetically, even though the games don't take place in the real world. It's the same problem with transitioning anime to live action, they risk breaking that "anime" ethnicity.

Number 1 was „too Asian for international audiences(tm)“, so they overcorrected with number 2. Number 3 is the current style of „generic beautiful“ they have followed for the past couple of mainline entries.
ID: hupel82Can honestly say this is the perfect answer for this. Plus different engines make it harder to follow the same style of an older engine so they just updated them for the engine too.
ID: hupre0vBasically this, which is why I thought it was Tifa for a second, this is the current generic anime face made to appear both asian and white and neither at the same time.
ID: hupfot9That sounds about right. I liked the first one though. But I guess the 3rd one is nice, I hope they stick to that from now on especially if they ever remake FFVIII.
ID: hurd9ktHmmm, the third one looks at least as Asian as the the first one to me?
-
Yeesh. Uncanny valley Michael Jackson in the middle there is decidedly unpleasant!
-
What are the middle and bottom one from?
Middle looks like an older woman who went all in on plastic surgery and can’t emote anymore, and bottom just looks like the lowest common denominator pretty mainstream Japanese girl.
ID: hupfdmuMiddle is from Dissidia (late DLC) bottom from FF Brave Exvius. Edit: I agree with most of what you said.
ID: hupi5z8Second Rinoa is low-key like HEE HEE
ID: hupvatrFFBE CG is really good. If you want to know how some characters from old final fantasy would look like on modern graphics, just search ffbe cg limit burst on youtube and a lot of team has CG limit burst that looks really well animated specially compared to Dissidia NT
-
Top is distinctly Rinoa. The bottom looks like they yassified her
ID: huq57pjBetter than the Michael Jackson version
-
It's a shame that they can't accurately replicate a face from 1999 using modern technology; particularly when that model is so far above and beyond every crappy attempt they've made to replicate it. I don't understand it. FFVII Remake proved that it can be done faithfully using modern technology.
ID: hur95pfI'd argue there are no faces in FFVII, and the first FFVII "faces" are from Advent Children in 2005.
-
I hate the Dissidia face so much. I was so excited for a game with Rinoa in it then disappointed when I saw what she looked like. It looks like a different character cosplaying Rinoa...OG and FF:BE look fantastic.
-
Why would they make the third one so similar to Tifa. I like Tifa don't get me wrong, but I also appreciate different and unique character designs, and Rinoa's original design was great
-
The problem with the middle one is the same as a lot of the dissidia NT characters. They look like they came out of dynasty warriors. Why in the world they let koei techmo do that game is beyond me.
-
Dead Fantasy Rinoa was such a good 3D rendition too, and that was a fanmade model created more than a decade ago
(RIP Monty Oum)
-
They do this with all characters to some extent. Modern Squall looks different too.
-
Maybe that's the aging effects due to time compression
-
I thought this was a “hire fans” shit post from
-
Whoa which versions are the 2nd two??
-
At least the bottom one kept one of my fave features of the original, her downturned eyeshape!. The middle one is a joke.
-
It's a shame that the 3rd one is tied to a ridiculously predatory style pay to win game. It's otherwise a good game, though. The late game and hard content are pay-gated without a shadow of a doubt. If you don't pull on the gacha and get the right units for their STMR (equipment) then there is no way in hell that you will be able to complete any of them.

2 is Kefka in a Riona suit
