John Beech creates amazing work in Dreams!

ID: grvyvz5

He is an absolute wizard

3 : Anonymous2021/03/22 16:54 ID: grtvt6y

Wow! It's really cool to see a dev who has such masterful control of the software they worked on. I hardly know how to log into the app I work on...

ID: grvyu99

Most software engineers are not end users of their products. I don't use a single product my company makes lol

4 : Anonymous2021/03/22 15:42 ID: grtlrak

Dreams NEEDS a PS5 and a PC port

ID: gruht7l

It also needs a PS+ release. Remove the access price and the amount of content will skyrocket.

ID: gruu7ro

It’s easy to believe that, but the honest truth is that it won’t lead to an increase in quality content. Most of the people who are willing to invest the huge amount of time required to learn how to build quality scenes and/or Dreams are the same people who would’t have hesitated to buy the game in the first place.

ID: grv1cpn

At $10 dollars anyone who wanted it got it.

ID: grxf05y

It was on sale for $10 very recently... Not much of a barrier tbh

ID: grvai1x

And PSVR 2

ID: grtogdf

Hear hear

ID: gruxlsq

Meh, the controller setup for dual shock/move controllers might not translate to PC as well. It's just as much an interactive sculpting tool as a game engine.

ID: grty0ag

I second this statement!! I love the game but hate controller creating. Can we start a Kickstarter for pc port?!

ID: gruvunz

Seriously… you have to try creating with the move controllers… Not saying you can’t with mouse and keyboard, but it is absolutely mind boggling how intuitive the move controller creation is once you get used to it. And it’s FUN. It’s like playing with the best toy set you could ever have.

ID: gru3k46

What about VR

ID: gru4a8j

It's already on PSVR.

5 : Anonymous2021/03/22 14:03 ID: grt8cv7

This game is criminally underrated

ID: grtenfm

True, should be a PS Plus game to get more people into it IMO

ID: grtgbac

Imo the best model would be to make it free to Ps+, but require a 1 time purchase of 10 or 15$ for access to creation tools

ID: gru7m9z

Theres a reason I own it but don’t play it. I’m not patient, and creative enough to make my own game and I’ve yet to find a good fan made game yet. The main/developer created story feels so much more polished and imagined than anything anyone has created so far.

Please point me in the right direction if I’m wrong but so far nothing has blown me away. Sure there are some clever or funny ideas but they don’t feel like fully realized “dreams”

ID: gruw8fu

Look up “Lock”. If you’re into puzzlers… it’s great.

ID: grucx83

That's the impression i have of it. I'm not interested in creating a game, and the game available to play look like a step below even indie.. so why waste my time on it?

ID: grve3mv

Look for a game called LOCK

ID: grw6fce

Try these out. It's a collection of interesting and very polished games

ID: grtejen

Genuine question, does this qualify as a game? I only ask because I assumed it wasn't and as such have mostly not had it on my radar.

ID: grtz0ci

It's an engine you can build games in, or create various assets. The music editor is bonkers good too! There's quite a few excellent mini-games you can play from other users out there. Check out a top games video or two, like this one: will show you the variety already on display in the user creations. (about a third of those can be played in VR as well, which is just bonkers.)

But MM did make an intro game for both the flat version and the VR version, and they also release playsets from time to time. So I guess it could qualify as a short ~actual game~ as well.

ID: grtg1zz

Dreams is a game where you can make your own games as well as play other people's games. It's a game with infinite content

ID: grtzyi0

I'm going to differ slightly from the other responses. It's an education game that walks you through the game design process, has lessons on art, lighting, mechanics, etc. There is utterly no suggestion that you have to make any games, rather you can create art, are little gadgets, or whatever. It's absolutely bloody brilliant, and relaxing, and just great. You sink time I to it just making little things, and before you know it your wondering how to make a set of drawers that can open and close. In vr it's even better. But no, don't think of it's as a game making thing, or a collection of shovelware; it's a relaxing education game to just enjoy

ID: grubuy9

I think the best description of it to newcomers is that it’s a social media platform for user generated games, music, animations and individual assets with the creation tools to make any of the above.

ID: grtfx14

It's a game as much as creative mode in Minecraft is a game

ID: grwhcfx

It has a proper campaign is that's what you're asking, plus the infinite content

ID: gru0ql8

I think it’s just rated

6 : Anonymous2021/03/22 17:32 ID: gru0waz

Are we sure Dreams isn't just a PS5 game being run on a PS4? I see so many great creations that look just stunning on Dreams.

7 : Anonymous2021/03/22 16:24 ID: grtrlxs

If that's not made from polygons what is it made from

ID: grtxptq

Flecks which, and I might be wrong, is like a particle system made up of tiny dots.

Edit: it's more complicated than that and I'm probably wrong. See the people below.

ID: gruxtuk

They call them flecks but it’s closest cousin (as far as rendering) is signed distance field. Alex Evans created them… it’s kinda insane if you look at one of his speeches on how he went about creating the engine Dreams runs on.

ID: grugp7v

Voxels, I believe.

ID: grv399t

It's a ray-marched voxel representation of a signed distance field, which is rendered using polygonal hulls (for occlusion, and making sure you can't see through thin objects) and flecks layered on top, which are essentially particles. So voxels are part of it, but there's a lot more going on. It's a pretty wild and unconventional approach to rendering.

This talk is very old at this point and a few things have changed, but it explains the core concepts.

Edit: pasted the wrong video

ID: gruzdlj

This is correct. There is a deep dive on the engine somewhere on YouTube by the devs.

I was SO all in on Dreams when it was released. I was ready to begin learning it and excited to see what I could do. I was following channels of people making big projects.

My biggest gripe though was using Move controllers and a normal controller, I just didn't feel like I could get the hang of it. I wanted a mouse and keyboard. My second biggest gripe was that I couldn't shake the feeling that I would be putting all that time and effort in to a game/game engine that wouldn't be "mainstream". I kinda felt like if I was going to spend all that time learning to make a game or scene in an engine, I should just learn Unity or UE or something.

Its an absolutely fantastic creation though and I really commend the devs

ID: grtx5fd

I used LBP2 and now dreams to help me prototype stuff I do Unity. I find dreams logic easier to use than c#

ID: grv25n8

I love Dreams, but as someone who works with C# every day, I find C# and Unity are much faster and easier to work with than logic gadgets in Dreams. The complete lack of debugging tools has killed several projects for me, just because I didn't have the ability to find the source of bugs once logic reached a certain level of complexity.

I think where Dreams really shines is in sculpting and level creation, though. I've made a few bits in 3DS Max and Blender, and Dreams is incredibly rapid to work with in comparison.

ID: grtj5vf

This. Loved Little Big Planet and creating levels as a teen but now that I’m an adult with, albeit limited, programming skills, I’d rather spend time within Unity creating a game rather than immediately limiting my player base by using something like Dreams. It’s impressive and cool nevertheless but from a creator standpoint I can’t justify spending time on a platform with what seems like an already dwindling player-base.

ID: grxh8nj

The playerbase was an issue from day 1. In the end, its a game that relies far too heavily on content creators spending months creating high quality content with absolutely no way to make money off it. We’ve seen multiple larger creators get hired or decide to go into game dev themselves because of this.

Dreams was unfortunately always kinda doomed. Took way too long to release and lost the spotlight, and relies entirely on users for content while also being way too complex for the average user to ever actually create anything.

9 : Anonymous2021/03/22 17:02 ID: grtwuvw

Is any part of this level playable? I haven't been on dreams in a few months

10 : Anonymous2021/03/22 18:18 ID: gru76j1

Needs to come to PS5 on PS+

11 : Anonymous2021/03/22 23:31 ID: grvbdxb

Dreams is stil 39,99 euro’s in the EU PS Store. Sony should cut it in half, just like they did in the US.

ID: grvcqse

I've seen it on sale a few times.

12 : Anonymous2021/03/22 17:38 ID: gru1pmw

What??? I refuse to believe that's not an actual picture of an actual carpet. Wtf I can't comprehend that level of photo realism in games??

ID: gru7jzi

The new grand turismo is pretty photo realistic as well in the screenshots I've seen

14 : Anonymous2021/03/22 18:46 ID: gruayam

If only this shit was on ps5 and pc...MAN!

15 : Anonymous2021/03/22 18:29 ID: gru8qe4

Bring this to PC. It's mostly dead on PS4.

16 : Anonymous2021/03/22 15:59 ID: grto3rc

[deleted]

17 : Anonymous2021/03/22 16:01 ID: grtohha

It's not RT

18 : Anonymous2021/03/23 00:21 ID: grvhbyv

If you know what you're doing, you can program shaders to make just about anything, plenty of games use shaders to give you the impression that you're seeing rocks, bricks or fur, but in the end it's just a trick on flat polygons.

This is nothing new, you could have probably done this 10+ years ago, at a horrible low framerate though lol.

19 : Anonymous2021/03/22 19:33 ID: gruh8hz

That texture looks so good at first I thought it was millions of individual polygon fibers.

20 : Anonymous2021/03/22 20:45 ID: gruqr5p

So let me get this straight, he made that carpet in such fine detail in the same version of dreams that is currently on PS4? How?

21 : Anonymous2021/03/22 20:48 ID: grur6je

Can't wait to see the curtain rendering.

22 : Anonymous2021/03/22 20:49 ID: gruraad

I am saving to get a 8K TV in 2022 or 2023. These graphics are ill.

23 : Anonymous2021/03/22 21:47 ID: gruypob

Until I can use it to furnish my player hideout home secret base trophy house in more games who the fuck cares?!

24 : Anonymous2021/03/23 00:52 ID: grvkvmm

Is there a reason why can’t play this on my account in the ps5? Only my brothers account can play it. On the PS4 it was never an issue. I just get a little lock symbol.

25 : Anonymous2021/03/23 01:30 ID: grvp7vi

Your brother needs to enable game sharing on your PS5.

26 : Anonymous2021/03/23 11:42 ID: grx22i2

Oh ok, I never even knew that was a thing! Thanks so much.

27 : Anonymous2021/03/23 02:45 ID: grvxqvn

Could someone explain this in dummy terms how this is possible in Dreams please? I hear flakes or distant something something, and know it’s not a imported picture...

28 : Anonymous2021/03/23 06:36 ID: grwht3p

Its time for this game to be free on PS plus.

29 : Anonymous2021/03/22 17:16 ID: grtyp1d

Man I don't care about grass or carpet. Can we talk about AI improvement, how smooth the game loads and plays?

30 : Anonymous2021/03/22 21:21 ID: gruvh16

Leave grass out of it mang

31 : Anonymous2021/03/23 03:02 ID: grvzj6j

Game is terrible but look at that carpet!

32 : Anonymous2021/03/23 03:08 ID: grw07ln

This game hasn't even been released yet

33 : Anonymous2021/03/23 07:56 ID: grwn2dk

What? Dreams came out last year

34 : Anonymous2021/03/23 12:38 ID: grx7c1h

Dreams has been such a waste of potential.
