- How Does Pac-Man's Skin Work? [Tom 7]
-
As an eldritch abomination, he's clearly phasing parts of his body into and out of existence, providing the appearance of a mouth closing and opening.
ID: gylmx5oID: gyluhvoThis is the only explanation here that both satisfies the original game’s depiction and manages to stay within our current understanding of mathematics. I mean the dude full on disappears, idk how anything depicted in the OP explains that.
ID: gylxxs8If we're only talking about arcade pacman as canon, then maybe it's just bending into the 3rd dimension.
ID: gylzsgmPacman is a sphere with a ridge of varying depth running around its circumference. As the Pacman sphere rotates around its pole, we see the appearance of an opening and closing mouth in profile
ID: gylt6uqThe power pellets are balls of photons. He himself is an electromagnetic orb that opens and absorbs the power and can radiate out energy the disrupts the ghosts. The ghosts are made of psychic energy.
ID: gym3hvdPac Man is also a 2 dimensional creature projecting himself onto this plane of existence who is invisible when looked at dead on

Given that his profile appears unchanged during jaw manipulation, instead of displaying the edges you would expect from wrinkles, I think telescoping rigid makes the most sense.
ID: gylat81I would argue for extreme elasticity. His skin doesn't wrinkle and holds its shape because it is fully stretchable, like made of lycra.
I'd argue it isn't telescoping rigid because you can't make a perfect circle using telescoping ridges, each ridge has to be slightly smaller than the last, so as they come around the circle gets deformed by the thickness of each ridge. If he has possibly hundreds of ridges the shape of his body would start to show that.
So my argument is wireframe skeleton with extremely flexible lycra type skin stretched over it.
ID: gyll83rThis to me is the clear answer. Similar to how fish skin on their jaws can expand and contract without wrinkles.
ID: gylwfkrHis relaxed form is mouth open.
ID: gyll1a0That’s what I thought too
ID: gyl8ui6That makes the most sense for normal pac man motion, but telescoping rigid doesn’t account for his death animation as drawn. The only way it could be telescoping rigid is if pac man was comprised of a large quantity of infinitesimally thin telescoping rigid segments. That would allow for both his normal movement animation and his death animation as well.
ID: gyld5nsI think his death animation is actually an accelerated version of his decaying and becoming one with the earth. Ashes to ashes and dots to dots.
ID: gylaitnwhat if, instead of disappearing, he is just turning black
ID: gylapf1I always considered the death animation as an implosion.
ID: gykx7rfIt does, it's the one I thought as well
ID: gylggt6In the death animation he collapses in on himself, so I think that could render rigig telescoping panels out of the realm of possibility, given that the segments would need to be incredibly thin to stack in such a fashion that would make him unable to be seen when he dies. I propose that it's more like the expansion of the jaws of the gulper eel, a combination of collapsible support segments with some form of material or flesh stretched taught over the frame, allowing for him to collapse in on himself, and still be able to close his jaw in a semi rigid fashion

Like a human mouth but BIG
ID: gyllbczSo which one do we have?
Am human btw
ID: gymd3qtSuspicious
ID: gyllm3oSerious question: How do our mouths work? Is it stretchy? Do we wrinkle our lips up if we open our mouth as wide as possible? Which one of these is most accurate to how we chew?
ID: gylnj49None of the above. Pac-Man is the same circular shape with mouth open or closed. When we open our mouths, our chins go down, lengthening our faces.
ID: gylnjpdI think there is a lot of tissue in the cheeks to allow them to stretch
-
Anyone ever wonder if pacman was a langolier?
-
Or his skin is actually a very stretchy small patch, which is being stretched even with his mouth open and to the extreme limits, when he closes the mouth. It would also explain, why upon death he collapses backwards - the muscles stop resisting and the previously stretched out skin pulls the jaws back.
So his normal state for keeping his mouth closed is actually him constantly fighting against his own skin pulling back and if he ever relaxed his muscles, he would die immediately, thus he can never sleep and just his existence is a constant torment of flexing his jaw muscles and being always awake. This also explains, why he dies instantly upon contact with the ghosts - he startles, the muscles spasm for just a microsecond and that's a death sentence for him (unless he takes some sort of chill pill to not be scared).ID: gylrvxrThis. Except that's not a chill pill. That would relax his muscles, causing skin retraction induced death. I'm fairly confident that the only logical conclusion is that the pills are pure PCP. Giving him increased speed and no fear of ghosts or perception of pain.
ID: gylsrxxYeah, you're probably right on that part. So Pacman is kind of like Chev Chelios from the Crank movie (or vice versa).
-
It's all wrong. This is what you're looking for.. And all the organs and digestive tract are contained within.
ID: gylzs4qBut then how does it die?
ID: gym0g7aIts skull/skeleton is brittle. If he doesn't eat enough calcium-rich power pellets, a touch from a ghost is enough to shock him into opening his mouth so wide in fright that the bones all crush into dust, and the process cannot be stopped until all atoms of bone are disintegrated. It's a horribly painful way to die.
ID: gylxi0hID: gymbtotBut this doesn't answer the skin question
-
It just works, just like king crimson
-
Shrinking. Like my penis.
ID: gyko98tMines more wrinkling/folding
ID: gykpay6Mine's more telescoping rigid hull
-
Pac-Man does not fold or compress, otherwise he would leave a corpse of reduced volume after performing his death screech. Therefore Pac-Man's body must be disintegrating along his circumference after contact with paranormal beings
-
Tom7 is a god among men. From reverse emulating a NES to neural network generated letters
-
Its simple its all foreskin
-
Pac-Man is a 3D being, living in a 2D world, he is not opening or closing its mouth, he just shifts along a third dimension.
-
Thanks I hate it
-
Considering he blinks out of existence at the end, I'm going with radially portaled articulating pocket dimension.
-
I mean, probably the same way as the human mouth right? Bottom left?
-
Thanks I fucking hate it
-
Pac Man is 2 dimensional so any wrinkling or folding is not possible
-
Maybe PacMan’s mouth naturally hangs open and the skin is stretched tight when biting?
-
These all assume that his body mass remains constant, but he shrinks around his center of mass while disintegrating which causes his mouth opening to widen.
-
The world is a lie. There is more than one Pacman. One of them always has its mouth open and the other one doesn't and they just switch places realy fast.

Or it is folding in a higher dimension that we cannot perceive.
