1990s nostalgia
2 : Anonymous2021/06/10 16:25 ID: h1aot0b

The difference is there’s no guilt involved as a kid and there’s no responsibilities or bills to pay to get in the way.

ID: h1bgtg1

"I am probably dead in 30 years tops, I feel like there is something else I should be doing but I don't know what it is and if someone told me, I'd have no motivation to do it, so here I sit playing these games"

ID: h1bxxc7

Why am I being attacked?

ID: h1bvt2m

Is all about responsabilities and the undeniable fact of needing money to survive and also keep buying more expensive videogames

ID: h1c09od

So true. I remember being told that when you grow up you can be anything you want to be. Well, that was a BIG FAT LIE!

ID: h1c996r

It wouldn't be very nice to tell you you're gonna waste the best years of you life in a cubicle

ID: h1c6ohz

Its perfect, when he's a kid it's a poster on the wall and when he's an adult it's a clock now.

ID: h1b92zs

This.

3 : Anonymous2021/06/10 15:33 ID: h1ah6ow

It's funny because in a sense the kid that grew up is doing the same things. There is an interesting thing to get from this when you're young everything is fresh and new but as you get older the experience changes since you had already done it or been in it many times. I think sometimes the opprotunity is better as older.

ID: h1akrw7

what I see when looking at this is the things the pic isn't showing: the adult needs to spend most of his time at work (that he probably hates) and worrying about bills, this is just a snapshot of one of his weekends and the earlier panel could have been just about any day, and school for many is just "lame" not something body/soul crushing

ID: h1bmb9n

Exactly. As a kid I thought school was so onerous and homework was the worst ("why do I have to take work home, isn't that what school is for!?")

Now I look back and realize I probably only did 2-3 hours of chores per week, most homework could be completed in an hour or less a night, and school got out at 2:00-3:00 p.m. (in high school, as a kid my mom sent me to a shitty private school that ran until 5:00 p.m., I'm still bitter about it), at which point we would all just head to a friend's house and chill and play video games (mostly Goldeneye, it was the 90s) and do fun crap for hours.

That's a far cry from working late into the night, and often on weekends, and then getting the occasional time to sit around and play some video games.

Childhood was the most free most of us will ever be, we just don't understand that as children.

And when I have kids I am going to make sure my kids have that kind of fun, free childhood. They will have chores and I will make sure they get good grades, but I'm not going to cram all their waking hours with extra-curricular activities.

Kids should get to have that period of freedom so that their souls can be properly crushed by adulthood, like mine was.

4 : Anonymous2021/06/10 19:22 ID: h1beqv5

The big difference for me was in the kid version there were several friends in the picture with me.

As I get older that's harder and harder to pull off.

Between internet gaming, people having jobs and careers and life just getting more complicated, for those who still enjoy social gaming as a past time it's just not the same.

ID: h1bn6qi

and then the single player games are GREAT but like, I don't have hours to sit down and play some dope RPG where I have to spend the first 30 minutes reorienting myself to the map/quests, then walking 45 minutes to talk to some NPC, to go collect 10 frogs for an hour, walk 45 minutes back, and then get a sword that I realize I already have.

ID: h1bfks7

Honestly my discovery of twitch and private discords has made it a social event which wasn’t something I had growing up.

ID: h1bg90b

See I'm the opposite.

I had the social aspect and twitch just isn't the same

I guess I was a rare extroverted game nerd

ID: h1bz6aa

Yet, we're all here lamenting, and most of the conversation is centred around whether you're red team or blue, right or left, pronouns or not.

It's harder to make friends when your own self identity is defined by the exclusion of others on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, or indeed political affiliation, class or ideological disposition.

5 : Anonymous2021/06/10 15:56 ID: h1akiwq

Can't speak for non Americans, but there is more to it than that. Good economy, worst political scandle at the time was bill Clinton getting some head, not only was rock music still relevant to the mainstream, but it was a decade defining genre. some of the most iconic cartoons dropped. Most importantly, it was an era before mainstream internet.

ID: h1anz0d

And at that age you don’t have the stresses and responsibilities of adulthood.

ID: h1aqmyu

Haha that too, though for me adult responsibility isn't the stressful part. It's dealing and relying on other adults to be team players.

ID: h1b93oz

worst political scandle at the time was bill Clinton getting some head

I suspect it probably only seems that way because you were a kid and not keeping tabs on politics.

ID: h1bjwq5

Well that and 24 hour news cycles were just becoming a thing. In the past 20 years we've had a ever increasing dosage of "if it bleeds it leads" jacked into our veins and sensationalized to drive profits.

ID: h1beri4

Pre-9/11...

Also when you're a kid, the world is new and you're experiencing everything for the first time, and that's much more powerful emotionally than doing the same shit when you're an adult.

ID: h1b4rvs

I mean the whole Rawanda situation was pretty horrific during the Clinton administration but we didn't have the same flow of information back then and the tv liked to focus more on the sex scandal stuff.

ID: h1c8yta

Yeah the West had just managed to win the Cold War and was stupidly pretending that the world wouldn't get scary again. If you were an adult in the 90s and didn't realize it then, this was the 90s feeling—pretending history had ended.

ID: h1bymhk

Mostly the internet I'd say.

We were all main characters in the American dream. Now there are many other narratives across the globe, many of whom cast us as side characters at best, or villains at worst.

It's harder to have an heroic sense of self when you're beaten down daily by the expectation that not only is there not a pinnacle, but reaching it will most likely be met with derision.

ID: h1bmq51

I remember that kids started getting pagers and MAYBE the first really basic cell phones that could fit in your pocket when I was in high school.

I can't imagine growing up with social media and not being to escape all that stupid shit and other kids even when I left school.

6 : Anonymous2021/06/10 17:00 ID: h1au09l

I can't even imagine how I would respond to playing the game from Today when I was a Kid 20 years ago.

7 : Anonymous2021/06/10 20:45 ID: h1bq3a1

This feeling hit me today at work and I almost cried cause I miss coming home from school and waiting for the boys to hope on so we could play battlefield 3 together. It may not be 1990's nostalgia but it's my nostalgia.

8 : Anonymous2021/06/10 22:21 ID: h1c2swx

I never have time for gaming, if I put how much time I spend on reddit vs time spent gaming i'd be very sad.

9 : Anonymous2021/06/10 20:45 ID: h1bq3c1

‘eat pant’ on the wall there

ID: h1bs40n

God dammit it’s the first thing I thought.

10 : Anonymous2021/06/10 17:33 ID: h1aywu7

I prefer current times tbh, there's a lot of annoyances that were in consoles and games in that time that i'm glad we got ridden of. And we can still play 90s games anyway so why would you want to time travel back to that decade? Would be dumb.

ID: h1b7iyz

More joy experiencing games as a kid for the first time compared to replaying an outdated game on a console that wasn't designed to function properly on a modern tv.

ID: h1bzimq

Nintendo needs to purge the asset flippers. Mobile needs to purge the micropayments.

Nothing saps joy quite like being preyed upon.

ID: h1bf0p8

For me it's other people.

As a kid I had in person gamer friends.

As an adult in this internet she that's so much harder to pull off

ID: h1b8kbs

If anything, I have these reverse-nostalgia moments where I get all warm and tingly realizing that I'm doing so many of the same things I was in the 90s but it's all upgraded...especially as far as video games and owning my own home go.

90's-Me would shit himself if he got to experience 5 minutes of PS5 while smoking dabs...

And like you said, there's so many ways to play these retro games anyway.

ID: h1bmw1u

Ha yo 90s me doing a dab and playing ps5...that shit would seem like fucking MAGIC.

I agree with this take though. I got switch for the sole purpose of reliving my smash bros glory days, and you know what, I don't ever play it. I no longer am surrounded by friends who want to play 4 player games constantly. The ways I get joy in gaming have changed. Now I am pretty much playing any split screen offline coop games (yeah not many so mostly COD Zombies), but that's what the wifey likes so gaming has adapted and grown while still gaming.

Also beat saber and ring fit have actually helped me stay in shape during COVID - Imagine telling someone in the 90s you would lose weight playing video games.

11 : Anonymous2021/06/10 16:51 ID: h1asnab

Nope. In the 90s we went outside and played with friends. Video games were for rainy days and nighttime.

ID: h1bakgh

Pretty sure I was playing games

ID: h1bf4ct

My greatest day was when we hard a garage sale and I set up my super Nintendo outside.

Best of both worlds!

12 : Anonymous2021/06/10 15:47 ID: h1aj9fd

Life huh?

Genius.

13 : Anonymous2021/06/10 19:51 ID: h1bimlp

Exactly how I feel

14 : Anonymous2021/06/10 20:58 ID: h1brx51

from what i can see, the problem is you started drinking.

15 : Anonymous2021/06/10 21:00 ID: h1bs5o6

The Bart Simpson poster meant a lot to him...

16 : Anonymous2021/06/10 21:01 ID: h1bs9h1

This is kinda dumb. Doing the same shit or not, as a kid you were free and just doing it because that's what you wanted to do at the moment.

You're not playing games as an escape from some soul crushing existence of bills debt and death.

17 : Anonymous2021/06/10 21:02 ID: h1bsc77

How you gona have a portrait of Bart Simpson on your wall tho

18 : Anonymous2021/06/10 21:24 ID: h1bv9ib

I dont think we really miss the 90s, I think we actually just miss not having adult responsibilities.

ID: h1c0cy9

Seriously. The same scene without Bart or the video game still rings true.

Remember when soda was the greatest thing in the world?

Ya know, rather than just a diabetes ticket, adult acne and feelings of guilt and shame for not exercising enough to balance it out, followed by YouTube binges about the evils of sugar and the evils of soda companies, pollution etc etc etc.

19 : Anonymous2021/06/10 21:33 ID: h1bwfri

Didn't know what self loathing was back then

20 : Anonymous2021/06/10 21:36 ID: h1bwzg6

Yeah the problem is what's outside of the panels, not what's in them.

22 : Anonymous2021/06/10 22:32 ID: h1c46qj

You don't miss being a kid in the 90s. The 90s was terrible. We had Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock, the 1993 Chevy Camaro and 1994 Ford Mustang, and politicians bitching about games like Night Trap that were less provocative than a lot of 50s sci fi movies. It was a stupid, stupid time. Not as stupid as the 80s, but close.

You miss being a kid, period. You didn't have to worry about politics and Fred Durst and deliverables and paying bills, you could just be a kid. School let out, you came home, and you played some games. Then you ate dinner, did your homework, and went to bed.

Now, you drag yourself home from work, pay some billionaire assholes your last penny so the lights don't go out and then flop down in front of the TV, exhausted and angry, and try to mimic what you did as a kid to recapture some fleeting sensation of what it was like to be free to stay up late drinking a two liter bottle of soda and scarfing pizza while trying for the 40th time in a row to beat Mega Man 3.

It doesn't work though because everything always hurts and your phone keeps ringing and that fourth beer is when the fatigue starts to set in and you start to lose focus and get frustrated with Gemini Man and quit. Then you just plop down in front of the TV and flip through Netflix and Hulu menus until the next thing you know it's 11:45 PM and you're almost done with the second six pack, get up, eat 1400 calories of leftover Chinese takeout even though you're already overweight and fall asleep hoping tomorrow isn't the day you get fired.

Anyway, how's your day goin'?

23 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:29 ID: h1caw9u

You take that back about Freddy D

24 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:55 ID: h1cdws5

No, I got yelled at by my boss for going to my car and listening to music on my break and I can't get past the first stage of Samurai Showdown anymore even though I used to be able to play for an hour at the bowling alley on a single quarter.

It's all Fred Durst's fault. It has to be.

Although, no matter what else you can say about Fred Durst, he can always rest soundly knowing he isn't Bob Ritchie.

25 : Anonymous2021/06/10 22:56 ID: h1c73ei

The cords weren't that long. Had to sit on the floor.

26 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:05 ID: h1c8635

It’s true. We didn’t have clocks in the 90s.

27 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:14 ID: h1c93te

Didn't have to worry about all the bullshit going on in the outside world backward then.

28 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:26 ID: h1cajno

BARM

29 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:33 ID: h1cbbv9

Yeah but in the 1990s things were cheaper

30 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:40 ID: h1cc5ax

So is the Bart Simpson picture just to date the comic, or did the artist really have one of those?

31 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:48 ID: h1cd43t

Yeah but I didn't get the shits when I ate junk food back then.

32 : Anonymous2021/06/10 23:59 ID: h1ceen9

I only had two worries as a kid in the 90s - maintaining decent grades and not getting caught watching scrambled porn by the parentals

33 : Anonymous2021/06/11 00:19 ID: h1cgmwe

Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?
