- PS5 Shortage should continue until at least September of 2022 according to this article.

Do you think they'll extend the console generation a year or two, beyond the normal 7 or so years? It just seems kinda silly that they'll be nearly 2 years into the life cycle before average Joes can buy one at a store.
ID: hbijte1ID: hbkge2mYeah, exactly. Jumping generations is not that simple. Like, PS4 has been struggling with basic PS4 games for like a year now so they basically had to release the PS5. So this gen could last over 7 years, but depending on how well the PS5 keeps up with games' power demands, PS6 could drop sooner or later
ID: hbgtdbwThere are many things that determine a console generations length beyond just sales numbers.
ID: hbhixjoThey wont extend a generation just because of availability. The PS6 will still release on schedule because the fact of the matter is that while it is hard to get a PS5 at the moment, they are still hitting their sales targets for them. Money is the main factor in all of these decisions and as long as all of the money is moving they way they want it to they won’t adjust their release plans. It sucks to think about but Sony as a whole doesn’t really care about the average joe being able to walk into a store and buy a PlayStation off the shelf as long as their units are selling out.
You see it happening in the PC market as well, people have been unable to get the new 30 series graphics cards since release but Nvidia still has their 40 series lined up to start production and release next year. Those things are even harder to get than a PS5.
The way I see things going is that rather than increasing the span of this current generation with the PS5 we see the last generation of products supported longer to increase software sales with cross generation titles that have PS5 enhancements. First party titles only have to target PlayStation, which lets them create next gen titles, but third parties have to consider the situation I talked about with the low availability of PC hardware which can make up a large amount of sales. They need to ensure that their titles can run on enough machines, console and lower spec PCs, so that they can hit their sales targets.
Edit: That’s not to say that this generation won’t inherently be longer though, the specs inside of the machine are a huge leap over any other new generation console before this one. The SSD in particular will keep the machine feeling snappy and responsive for WAY longer than the PS4 ever did. We are starting to hit a point where it becomes EXTREMELY hard to make things like consoles and gaming PCs perform better without increasing heat production and power draw by a lot.
ID: hbje1g7Yeah but less people are going to buy the next generation straight away if they’ve only had a couple years to play the current generation.
ID: hbjm3j2Well less video game consoles in the hands of the consumers probably hurts software publishers more than the video game console company which have many sources for revenue like video game console sales, services, publishing rights and accessories, good thing Sony trimmed the heatsink to increase profits.
Video Game Console companies make bank on software and accessories rights…
ID: hbjsoycIt would be more interesting if we see a PS5 Pro or if they move directly towards PS6. Since we have almost no games that make use of the ultra fast ssds, i think this generation will last min. 8 years and more.

To even see a notice of recovery in the silicon sector we are looking at least 2023. These only 2 factories which make the silicon are at 100% which are usually at 80%. Car, fridges, phones not just ps5/pc& Xbox use them and there is not enough to go around. There is a new factory been made in the US and another in Taiwan but I think I heard they are not going to be finish untill 2023. Tough times ahead if your in need of anything that popular
ID: hbj3x99it seems crazy to have such vital things only being made in 2 places. I assume silicon is extremely difficult to make or something?
ID: hbjx3fxThe single major player for the most recent and innovative chip designs (TSMC) have continually invested $10-30 billion in development and expansion every year for the last few decades. It’s almost impossible to catch up with what they’re doing in a reasonable amount of time.
ID: hbksepoJust building a factory to create silicon wafers takes multiple years and billions of dollars. That's not even mentioning all the crazy things that they need to do to keep making transistors smaller and smaller and still have a functioning chip. PS5 is on "7"nm, human hairs are about 80k-100k nm thick. We're talking the width of a few atoms at a certain point. It's not something you can simply do, it takes a ton of r&d.
ID: hbifw9cI have a PS5 but my replacements dryer is gonna take 6 weeks to get here. Clothes line here I come.
ID: hbko4xbPro Tip: Buy a PS4 pro, put clothes behind it as the jet engine fan immediately dries your clothes and warms your home for winter.
ID: hbjnwhpIt's nowhere near as simple as that. New fabs are brought online to produce future tech using future processes. You don't bring a new fab online to make current stuff. It means products then move to other fabs, which also isn't a simple make it there rather than here.
TSMC are already doing stuff in their prototype fab in Hsinchu that's 3+ years out. New fabs will be for this.
ID: hbgmk1yAnd even when they finished in 23 it will take probably another year or two until they can pump out stuff for consumers. Thats all super complicated tech not like a Factory for Car assembling.

It's also impressive how much they are producing to still have shortages.
ID: hbg7q6gThey’ve only built enough so far to cover around 10% of what was built for PS4. Pretty sure that more than 10% of PS4 owners want a PS5, in addition to new people that want a PS5. I think it is only going to get worse as we head into Christmas season.
ID: hbgciooAs of April 2021, they have already sold more PS5 (8.04 mil units) than back in 2014 when PS4 was 6 months old (7.68 mil units).
So I don’t think they are behind at least on a time scale basis. Just the demand for PS5 seems higher than PS4.
ID: hbgcbazThe numbers are strange. One thing I do know is nearing half my friend's list on PSN now have a PS5.
-
maybe we’ll have more Ps5 games by then. here’s to hoping.
ID: hbja5ezExactly. It still feels like the PS5 era hasn’t started.
-
Console shortage look like they’re already leading developers (including Sony owned studios) to backport the majority of their games to last generation consoles.
At this rate I’m worried my PS5 is going to be a glorified PS4 Pro Pro for over 2 years.
ID: hbh6ca3Yeah I wonder if games like the new god of war would be releasing on PS4 if the PS5 was more widely Available
-
And here mine sits waiting for a game I actually want to play lol.....
ID: hbiefpjI mostly play Apex, which still has the ps4 version.
I don't even think I own a true current generation game.
And I've had this thing for 10 months
-
Finally got mine a week ago (for the normal retail price) and couldn't be happier. Returnal and Astros Playroom alone have made it so worth it. This is the first time Ive bragged about it. Been trying to refrain from doing so, but I just have to let it out.
ID: hbgcsjcEnjoy! Astro is such a great game
ID: hbgdu7eI got mine in February and I still absolutely love it to death. It is a remarkable machine and will provide untold hours worth of unbelievable entertainment.
The PS4 Pro was my first console since the n64 days and I logged over 4,500 hours on it from 2016 to 2021. The most fun gaming I’ve had in my life.
Matter of fact I evacuated for Ida(New Orleans) I took my pets, and my Ps5.
Very happy you got one and hope you have many many hours of amazing gaming!
ID: hbgdxv6Don’t skip on ratchet and clank! Never played the series before but I think it’s been one of the most “wow” ps5 games. Returnal is probably the most addictive, and demons souls is also very pretty
ID: hbgecs5Damn it, I was already considering it. Now I'm sold. Looks like I'm about to have a PS5 backlog build up already lol
ID: hbglo85Brag on my good man, brag on!

It’s gonna be wild to look back at the legacy of the PS5 and realizing it was in scarcity for probably half its life span when it’s all said and done.
I think a bigger problem we didn’t realize was a problem is the fact that all the biggest countries in the world rely on a couple factories to produce chips for everything from phones, to tools, to cars…the list goes on and on.
There should be a lot more companies producing these chips in a society that is so reliant on technology.
ID: hbg53i0There are even fewer companies that make the machines to make the chips: Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron.
ID: hbgezqxAlso ASM and ASML
ID: hbg8ah92022 is not even going to be close to half it's lifespan. I get what you're saying and this is definitely the first time this has happened to this extent. But these consoles are going to have more longevity then any previous gen.
ID: hbg9etrIf you read into the article they say it could even go into 2023, and honestly if we don’t get a grip on this pandemic in the next year I do see it continuing. The bot sniping technology is also incredibly advanced this day and age, and is a reason we’ve seen Switch shortages on and off it’s entire life span so far as well.
Half it’s life span could be slightly hyperbole, but I don’t see these consoles going longer than the usual life of about 7 years. We all thought the same thing about the last generation, but it was still your standard cycle. The crossover between the new and old consoles will just be longer into the new generations.
ID: hbgdd8bThink we have a few plants coming online in the US over the next few years. It won’t ease the situation of today but hopefully in the future.
ID: hbgkw3jThose fabs will be operational in ‘22 or ‘23, hence why the chip shortage probably won’t end until then.

I still have my alerts on for PS5 stock but I’m feeling a bit salty towards Sony lately with some of their decisions on cross-gen games.
I think I’m okay with my PS4 Pro right now, maybe by the time I get around to having one I’ll be able to play those exclusives at a reasonable price. $70 a pop is still a hard pill to swallow.
ID: hbhzj10Wait for sales they only stand full price for a few months, use psdeals to see the fluctuations in the prices
ID: hbi6pifYeah unlike Nintendo games lol
ID: hbhgzygJust wait for sales. No reason to buy single player games full price.
-
Yup. Little Jimmy is missing out again this year. People will horde them up more as we get closer to Xmas. Scalpers win.
-
They should have an ordering system like the steam deck where you can reserve and get one when it's your turn and they are available
-
PS5 Shortage should continue until the PS6 debuts.
ID: hbgl56pgonna place my preorder now
-
There's no hurry to get one anyway. Besides Morales and Ratchet & Clank, I still only use mine for PS4 games.
-
Got mine at launch, constantly hoping it doesn’t die since I probably wouldn’t be able to get another
-
Try preordering at a shitty tech shop near you. May work wonders. I waited 3 months and finally got it.

If PSVR2 runs well enough I can see this generation lasting quite a long time. But say the PS6 can run all the 5 and 4 games only better and can be built cheaper Sony will definitely jump to that in the future.
