Returnal - VFX Breakdown | PS5

Still my GOTY for 2021.

ID: hd4q3q0

100% agree.

ID: hd4ukc4

This game opened up Rogue games for me. I beat this, platinum'd it then immediately got Hades on release and played it throughout the week and got the platinum in that. Going through Enter the Gungeon now and waiting for the all in one binding of Isaac release I hear is coming soon

ID: hd5550v

Yea boi

3 : Anonymous2021/09/16 13:14 ID: hd2pe0m

Great game, frustrating platinum to go for.

ID: hd2usbx

I’m still trying to find the last few damn xenoglyph ciphers and it’s driving me mad lol RNG collectibles are not a pleasant experience.

ID: hd34f7v

Going offline and restarting the PS5 helped me get those last few I needed, in case that helps anyone! I was going crazy looking for the ciphers until I saw that offline tip. Definitely worth a shot if you haven't tried that yet.

ID: hd2way6

I also found them kinda easy to miss which is annoying, as in they sometimes blend into the environment.

ID: hd3b7bi

thats why you don't go for the platinum

ID: hd4b852

Pro tip: your trophy list itself is worthless, stopping wasting time for arbitrary bullshit unless you’re actually having fun. Quality time is all the matters in the end.

ID: hd3em55

They really screwed that aspect up.

If it was stuff like "Kill every boss 10 times" and "fully level up every weapon" then they would have gotten the long grind they were going for while also giving the player a reason to keep doing full runs.

But what they did instead was just force the player to go to a specific level, sprint through everything, and hope that a rare room spawned to get a last glyph. Really bad idea.

ID: hd3uf9c

i still wait for the damn save-game feature, so that i can be bothered to play it

4 : Anonymous2021/09/16 13:21 ID: hd2qdpk

It's such an impressive game and I love how they utilize particles in order to really sell these alien creatures and structures. Man, the things some devs can come up with!

5 : Anonymous2021/09/16 13:07 ID: hd2ojvl

GOTY. Can’t stop playing it.

ID: hd2pxnd

I know, I want to go back and do another play through. Perfect game to release with the console, too. The worlds, the effects - they made this beautiful game that really highlights what the PS5 can do.

ID: hd3lma9

Yup, mine as well. They knocked it out of the park

6 : Anonymous2021/09/16 14:11 ID: hd2wxum

Damn, this is interesting!

7 : Anonymous2021/09/16 13:52 ID: hd2uar0

This video seems like it was specially made for the guys at Digital Foundry lol

ID: hd2xelw

Would be cool if they mentioned it in a Direct Weekly!

8 : Anonymous2021/09/16 15:24 ID: hd37kvr

Gameplay is 10/10, easily one of the best feeling games to play of the last 5-10 years. I just wish the story didn't completely fell flat on it's face. I felt really invested in it only to feel totally an utterly let down. Worth playing of course but it did leave a little sore taste in my mouth. The atmosphere is amazing though, such a great job.

I don't often want sequels to games, rather have a fresh experience, but I could easily play another one of these in 2 years with some new enemies and protagonist/better story.

ID: hd3la1q

Personally I really really liked the ending and secret ending a lot though I do get the disappointment seeing how out of left field it came

ID: hd3bc7y

That story was pretty fucking cool tbh

ID: hd3uq2f

I thought it was cool but I just wish they gave you more of a concrete picture.

ID: hd3rx0l

I really like the gameplay too, but after getting beat by the first boss a few times, I lost motivation to play.

It's not that he's too hard, he didn't seem too bad, a few more attempts and I'd probably get his moves down. It's that getting to him is a gigantic chore. It probably took me a half dozen runs each time to make it to him. It was a little too frustrating, to be on a good run, make it to him and die, and be back at square one.

If there was some progression of some sort, making me better somehow each run, I'd be ok with the grind. Even ether was mostly useless, even though it's so hard to find it seems precious.

This is coming from someone who's played and enjoyed tons of roguelikes, including rogue. (Nethack, ADOM, Angband)

ID: hd3yb9m

The weapons upgrades are how you get better each time. With upgraded weapons it almost felt too easy by the end.

9 : Anonymous2021/09/16 16:56 ID: hd3lef1

I love how the particles are also in 3d sound. I can hear particles bouncing all eound me when I shoot the ALT fire mode for the vertical/horizontal shot. LOVE IT

10 : Anonymous2021/09/16 19:38 ID: hd49eva

All this video shows me is all the level bosses I didn’t get to

11 : Anonymous2021/09/16 13:18 ID: hd2pvsz

Adding a mid run save would’ve sold more copies. People don’t like their time wasted.

ID: hd2qekw

Adding a mid run save would’ve sold more copies. People don’t like their time wasted.

This is the only reason I haven't purchased this. Hearing about the weird save function really turned me off to playing it.

ID: hd2r04i

Returnal isn’t a well designed rogue-like akin to Hades, runs can take hours and you run the risk of losing so much. I’m a dad, I don’t have that time to waste with practically nothing to show for it no matter how good the game is.

ID: hd2t9go

The lack of save is why I got rid of the game.

ID: hd2sqm6

Yeah, they should at least implement a system similar to Bloodborne. You can't easily save scum but you can at least shut the game off and pick up exactly where you left off.

I'm fine with the high stakes/long runs. I just think it's lame to lose progress if you want to play a different game or when your console magically resets itself overnight on rest mode.

ID: hd2sxlj

This 100%. Hoursemarque’s excuse sucks. If Souls games can have a pseudo save system so can this and if people are that determined to save scum and waste their time doing so, that’s on them.

It’s just not acceptable to not have some sort of mid run save and saying “use rest mode” is just bullshit.

ID: hd2w7g1

The ONLY reason I did not buy this game is because of the lack of save feature. I play other games with my 11 year old daughter and we switch games all the time. Can't be in a middle of a run and lose it. Unless this save feature is brought in, I am not buying it. I believe IGN or Gamespot gave deducted one point just because of this save issue.

ID: hd4csha

I really like the game. Haven't played in months because there is no saving.

ID: hd2ryud

People don’t like their time wasted.

that’s why i play every game on the easiest difficulty possible

ID: hd2s9z7

That’s just not a strong excuse for some poor development choices.

ID: hd2qf7u

It's definitely a reason I'm hesitant to replay it

ID: hd2rl3b

I 100% would have bought it if it wasn't for that.

12 : Anonymous2021/09/16 14:15 ID: hd2xix1

Returnal made me a fan of HM. It’s amazing to see what they were able to achieve with their first “AAA” game.

If they added a save system and tightened up the narrative so that it was a little less obtuse, this would’ve been a front runner for GOTY.

Excited to see where they go with Sony lending support.

ID: hd49lu6

If you want a bite-sized game, I highly recommend their game Nex Machina. Like a top-down Returnal.

13 : Anonymous2021/09/16 19:42 ID: hd4a2jk

Over 100 hours into it. And I keep coming back.

ID: hd4j18q

It’s my favorite game on the PS5 so far.

14 : Anonymous2021/09/16 19:46 ID: hd4ajgv

Can’t wait to grab this on sale.

15 : Anonymous2021/09/16 13:07 ID: hd2omfn

I wonder what are the sales number as todate.

ID: hd2znsz

Good enough for Sony to buy Housemarque, it seems.

ID: hd2pafi

Probably in the 600,000~ there was an article with the game sales not that long ago. Was in the 521,000 somewhere along thos lines.

16 : Anonymous2021/09/16 14:36 ID: hd30jgf

It’s a really great game. Too hard and individual sessions are way too long for my taste and time available to game, but it’s definitely worth it for people who can blow 2-3 hours per gaming session.

ID: hd37a8x

I just left my PS5 on instant on or whatever it's called. But I only use it for Exclusives so I could still use my Series X for other stuff. If you only have a PS5 it would be real bummer for sure.

ID: hd38zk1

It restarted my run twice due to automatic updates. I just walked away from the game entirely.

18 : Anonymous2021/09/16 17:54 ID: hd3u1gx

I feel like I can't invest in this game because I can't save. Did they change that? I play other games, so I have to switch out.

19 : Anonymous2021/09/16 19:35 ID: hd48zms

Nope, still can't save & can't switch to other games. You can go watch Netflix but you can't play other games.

20 : Anonymous2021/09/16 14:34 ID: hd30bue

I really hope that nvidia leak regarding Returnal coming to PC was real

21 : Anonymous2021/09/16 18:15 ID: hd3x9g2

Yeah my only complaint is that aiming with a controller sucks compared to a mouse. Would be a game changer if it came to PC

22 : Anonymous2021/09/16 15:02 ID: hd34fi6

It held me for about a week, and I was kinda disappointed because all the comments made it seem like it was an incredibly difficult game.

Idk how to put it without sounding high and mighty, but maybe a lot of people who love this game never played a roguelike before? If you’ve played Isaac, gungeon, hades, etc, idk if you could rank it very high. It’s beautiful and the narrative is interesting, and it’s cool to see a game like this considering the genre is pretty low budget/indie compared to AAA titles. But I was pretty disappointed to roll credits at about the 9 hour mark. And that’s factoring in a couple of crashes pretty far into a run, so i would’ve rolled credits sooner.

Something about it just didn’t make me want to replay just for fun compared to a game like Isaac

23 : Anonymous2021/09/16 17:45 ID: hd3ss2y

cant wait to actually get into it when they add a save feature or my baby gets older lol.. just dont find that many long windows to play

24 : Anonymous2021/09/16 14:47 ID: hd325t2

Still no save function

25 : Anonymous2021/09/16 14:19 ID: hd2y3yi

Wasn't particularly impressed with this game. Graphics-wise it felt like a PS4 game.

26 : Anonymous2021/09/16 14:32 ID: hd2zyye

What do you smoke dude ?

27 : Anonymous2021/09/16 16:23 ID: hd3ggcs

some bomb shit but I'm not sure how that's relevant? the game runs at native 1080p and is upscale to 4k, compared to Ratchet and Clank the game looks a generation old. Apparently this is a sore subject to bring up.

28 : Anonymous2021/09/16 14:40 ID: hd3171x

I’m ashamed for you that you said this. Holy shit LMAO

29 : Anonymous2021/09/16 15:19 ID: hd36y7w

I wish the game ran at a decent resolution though. That's my only issue

30 : Anonymous2021/09/16 17:24 ID: hd3pm0e

The native resolution is 1080p, and then they use some different techniques to upscale it to 4K. Definitely not as purdy as true 4K, but it works well enough for me.

31 : Anonymous2021/09/16 16:19 ID: hd3fthb

Do they mention the VFX around the mid run save points? :/

32 : Anonymous2021/09/16 21:01 ID: hd4lk6a

Have you ever tried getting better at the game instead of complaining online?

33 : Anonymous2021/09/16 20:00 ID: hd4cpha

GOTY for me.

Lack of save is unacceptable to lots of people -- especially people who aren't very good at the game, who don't have a lot of free time to play, who want to play other games, or whose electricity goes out.

They could still not allow save scumming. Just have an autosave when you enter each room.

34 : Anonymous2021/09/16 20:23 ID: hd4g3yh

Just save and quit would be enough.

35 : Anonymous2021/09/16 22:24 ID: hd4wy82

The game tends to crash though. Or at least it did a couple months ago.

36 : Anonymous2021/09/16 22:22 ID: hd4wqgj

It was a ton of fun until it nearly bricked my PS5 two hours into a run. Not even going to consider playing again until there's a save function. It's disgraceful that 5 months after release it still hasn't been added.
