My 6800 Memory Junction temperatures would rocket to 90+ C on any simple application so I opened it up and discovered no thermal pad contact on one memory chip

Forgot to mention it is the Reference card from AMD Direct. I probably voided my warranty for opening it but I didn't want to pay shipping then wait many weeks to get an RMA replacement for a simple fix. As you can see clearly on the second picture, the memory dies that had contact with the thermal pads has their surface a bit more faded compared to the one that didn't get any contact (most left). So if you are experiencing erratic/abnormal temps, don't let people tell you that its normal for memory chips to run hot and it is still within spec. It is probably due to a misplaced pad.

On the side note, I teared the carbon thermal pad but I reused it anyway. Core temps increased by about 5 degrees C, but given how I am sinking about 20 degrees more into the vapor chamber from that one memory chip, I think it is still working fine.

You did not void your warranty by doing this.

Which specific brand and card? That could help others with same issue on that brand.

Sorry, forgot to mention, reference card

But which make - they still put it together. i.e. my RX 6800 is a ref but its sapphire who's names on the box with AMD.

wait, isn't that thing on the right of the QR code the pad you're looking for?

Yeah, and its not supposed to be there. I moved it back in to the right position now it went from 95C to 70C 🙂

Looks like it.

Nah you'll still get your warranty if you need it. Just remove the sticker you punctured and pretend it was never there

That sucks. At least you found the issue. Also what's up with the thermal paste? So dark almost looks like liquid metal.

It’s not thermal paste. The amd reference cards use a graphine thermal pad.

Ahh, thanks for the info. I guess me not knowing = downvote by some people.

Hitachi carbon thermal pad. supposedly good stuff, cost $25 for a 1mm sheet.

You should probably replace it because it looks like it ripped when you removed the cooler.

Sad to say the least.

Actually today I re-pasted my Sapphire Nitro+ 6800 XT and saw a hotspot/junction reduction of about 10C.

9 : Anonymous2021/10/12 22:16 ID: hges4iq

So the referencece cards don't use thermal paste?

AMD has gone downhill, their cards are garbage now!
