My pl1 is 65W. Pl2 110W. That's with an 3 year old 8950HK in an Alienware 17 R5. Granted there are not a lot machines coming out with the old form factor, it should still be doable with a wide area spreaded vapor chamber like a clevo usually uses on the high end models DTR's

Unlikely since the desktop chips with the seperate io dies have terrible idle power draw. This will be a laptop SKU or a desktop xxxxG SKU that has integrated graphics as well. As denoted by the -H which is usually reserved for those types of dies.

It should use the same chiplets, I think that's the point. V-cache, let's wait and see.

It's an interesting thought, though. If AMD is planning Raphael with V-cache from the get go, it's certainly possible that there will be a mixed family with both V-cache and without.

Chiplets on mobile are a huge no-go. Current breed of chiplet-based ryzen CPUs consume upwards of 34W under idle. Ryzen is only efficient during load which saddens me greatly. Due to my setup, my computer idles at almost 100W which is a bit ridiculous (CPU + 6800XT + X570s + PSU power loss). CPU stays at 25 W PkgWatt and only 1.2W CorWatt. GPU maxes out VRAM clock due to differing monitor refresh rates (60 Hz + 165 Hz) and stays at around 34 watts.

I don’t believe Zen 4 is launching with v-cache. The last I checked, they can’t yet do it on N5, not because of anything technical, but because TSMC hasn’t expanded to N5 yet. My information is out of date, however, so I could be wrong.

It may also be in AMD’s interest to hold Zen 4 c-cache until Intel refreshes it’s lineup.

It doesn't matter to many people as ecosystem precludes comparison shopping from one to the other. Add in cost delineation being a HUGE factor now. To get the top-end Apple chip you have to spend $3,500. Only businesses will be buying these in any real numbers.

Intel's more equipped to compete with Apple laptops than AMD is in the near future. Alder Lake's new architecture and 14 cores on a laptop should match the M1 Pro/Max in raw CPU performance.

Zen 4 may change things, but it's not expected for another year.

That will not be a popular comment on other subreddits. Was finding more information about new AMD CPUs for laptops in 2022, I was instead stricken with the constant bombardment of "AMD and Intel is dead, lol".

But, how would a 14-core benefit that much in a laptop? Seems like more of a power issue that I'm concerned about rather than performance.

CPU performance isn't the main issue. M1 performance cores are FAST, but they are also power hungry. Next generation Intel and AMD products should compare quite well against that.

The real issue is the GPU. There's nothing on the horizon from Intel or AMD that even has a chance of coming close to what Apple has to offer. It's simply nuts.

That would get me to upgrade my laptop before its refresh cycle...paired with a fast enough GPU I might actually retire my desktop then. That would be damn amazing. But, AMD has to do this one right. The Advantage program has been a joke outside of HP. Also, only HP has the correct IO port setup to use something like this (mDP+HDMI on dGPu for proper display spanning, USB-C on iGPU for Alt-DP mode) for docking station support and such.
