these kits are so weird. Surely there has to be a more effective way of utilizing the PS5 SOC? Because as it stands this is a highly ineffective patchwork solution. I'm guessing that whatever contract AMD has with Sony prohibits them from using the internal GPU as intended? As in Sony don't want AMD to basically compete with their own PS5-like computer or maybe they have certain proprietary tech that they want to keep to themselves and therefor demand these weird workarounds?

If you look at the die shot of the PS5 SOC you'll see that the GPU takes up most of the die. This means that the GPU is the most likely part to be defective (it's also why console SOCs actually have more CUs than they end up using)

Also even if AMD had a bunch of PS5 SOCs with working GPUs that had defective CPU cores or the GPU wasn't hitting the required frequencies at a given power that still leaves the issue of AMD having to provide driver support for that GPU.

When people tested that motherboard with an Xbox One SOC on it they had to use a very specific driver package that was included with the board for the GPU in the SOC to work correctly.

Yeah drivers are definitely a concern. But with regards to defective units I believe that most of these APUs should have at least a partially functioning GPU, right?

I'm sure if they had wanted to (or were allowed to) they could have sold a cut down APU, right? E.g. a 28 CU GPU at a lower frequency, hell even 22 CUs at 1.4ghz would have allowed for an awesome 1080p gaming APU.

This, GPU is borked or not up to spec, likely those "just out of spec" parts are further cut so nobody actually "unlocks" a "PS5 PC" for the price of a really bad SFF APU.

In any sane timeline this would be garbage.

If I recall, it’s not just an RDNA GPU die (same for MSFT). Sony put a lot of time and money into adding some customizations that I’m sure they want a royalty for.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but If it is the ps5 soc shouldn't it already have an integrated gpu? Then why add an rx550?

ID: hj4v7z3

The GPU in the 4700S is disabled because it's either completely defective or even if it does work it doesn't meet the spec required to be used in the PS5 (too few working CUs or it can't reach the required frequencies at a given power).

Its also probable the GPU is disabled due to any proprietary customizations that Sony made.

Then it's no different from a normal 3700x(aside from power consumption and the frequencies it reaches)?

From the perspective of not wasting silicon I get it, but this would only be cool if it also had the PS5 GPU as well.

5 : Anonymous2021/11/03 19:36 ID: hj6ter7

These things are hot garbage if not just an outright scam.

6 : Anonymous2021/11/03 15:17 ID: hj5okrt

wack

7 : Anonymous2021/11/03 10:19 ID: hj4pkh9

For $299?

ID: hj4q3ch

$679 for the base model which gets you the motherboard with the CPU and RAM, custom small form factor case, two heatsinks with a fan on each one (one for the CPU and one for the GDDR6), PCIe riser, an RX 550 and a Windows license.

Edit: I'm guessing it also includes the required power brick.

What a joke.

Consoles can be cheap because they make up tons of money in services and game sales. A Mini PC running PS5-esque specs with no other revenue will therefor be a lot more expensive normally.

Also the economies of scale are significantly different.

I am so confused by all of this. Wasn't this kit released last year? Also, ltt did a video one this pc like a month ago

ID: hj5fwp7

Yes but it's only now that Minisforum released a mini PC based on the 4700S kit.

The RX550 in the render looks exactly like the Yeston RX 550 I have in my VM server.

The product itself is still useless. You can do a more capable basic PC for less or a slightly less capable small form factor PC for much less and it lacks the connectivity to even be a home server / router / smart thing.

Please for the love of God, Minisforum, don't bring liquid metal TIM anywhere near this thing.

ID: hj72k5o

The whole LM thing seems limited to the review units which according to Minisforum were mixed up with units used for testing the durability against being dropped in shipping.

The production units seem to have properly applied LM and Minisforum released a video showing their LM application method.

Implying the PS5 isn't mainstream?

12 : Anonymous2021/11/03 18:04 ID: hj6f0mj

Even Linus already has a video out about these.

PS5 is RDNA2. AMD4700S is not.
