It will work once you update the bios, though be prepared for the bios being a lot more bare bone after that, because on non max to make space for zen3 msi cut out most fancy graphics and some features.

I have a 5600x and I'm happy with it. As for whether or not it'll work with a b450 board. I know they said there would be bios updates for some b450 boards to be compatible with the latest Ryzen. You'd have to go to your manufacturers site and look up your specific board to see if they made a compatible bios for it.
ID: hkcb40pmsi B450 tomahawk have 2 version Max and non Max it's say will run on Max but nothing for non max version....
ID: hkcchhqIf it doesn't say it for the non-max version then I'd say it won't work. That said, you could upgrade your mobo. A b550 isn't expensive. The new Intel chip with a new mobo will not only be expensive, it'll also be tough to get. Not to mention the cost of ddr5 memory. If I were you, I'd get a b550 board and a 5600x. If you have dual rank memory, the performance will be awesome!
