Ratchet and Clank (2016) is awesome.

So I'm only a few hours into the game, but man I can't believe I skipped this game when it first came out. The visuals and cutscenes are fantastic, but also the overall quality of the audio and voice-acting are superb. The core gameplay is great fun and also a bit more challenging that I was expecting, which was a nice surprise. Also love the lite RPG elements, weapon upgrade system, and card-collection aspect.

Also, on PS5, the load times are so freaking snappy. I don't know how they compare to the PS4, but it makes the experience feel smooth as butter.

I played the original Ratchet and Clank waaaayyyy back in highschool, and have fond memories of it. Also played (and loved) Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty on PS3. But for whatever reason, I stopped paying attention to the series and wrote it off as "too simplistic" or whatever. Boy was I wrong, this is just pure fun.

And this is a LAST GEN game, and it looks freaking gorgeous. It has me totally hyped for Rift Apart and reignited my interest in the series as a whole. Can't wait to see how Insomniac pushes the visuals forward for their first full PS5 game, especially after how gorgeous Miles Morales was.

Anyways, just wanted to make a feel-good post about this feel-good game. Great of Sony to give it away for free. Was the perfect weekend / chillout game for me.

Oh man, that means you missed the PS3 game A Crack in Time! That's widely considered as one of if not the best Ratchet game out there, hopefully Sony remasters it one day or just ports it to PS5 in some way

ID: grmp9j6

Damn, I just checked my trophy profile and I'm about half way done with that one and last played it in 2011! Don't even remember it specifically and it's supposedly the best. Going to have to finish that one up again.

Plan is to platinum all of them.

ID: grn8rsa

I only have 4 platinums and A Crack in Time is one of them.

ID: grmtp5w

A Crack in Time was my first ever PS3 game, fucking loved it.

ID: grn3uuo

The Future trilogy was incredible, shame the rest of the PS3 games were not close to them.

The 2016 game is good but it's not top tier Ratchet IMO

ID: grncrxe

Waiting for a Deadlocked remaster 🙁

ID: grn4bx5

I went and watched a review if Crack in Time and realized I had played it. But I guess my memory got fuzzy over a decade!

ID: grmjlxe

Size Matters was my first, then Secret Agent Clank, then A Crack In Time. The PS4 game is good I guess in terms of the original foundation and graphics, but it doesn’t have as many concepts from the later games, such as free-roam travel on your ship, mini planets, 360-hover boot traversal on planets.

I am looking forward to A Rift Apart though

ID: grn72nw

The ps4 story sucks and ruined the characters but the gameplay is fun

ID: grn6k8l

I've been playing it all day on the PS3, I have to say it doesn't seem to need any updating, it still looks stunning.

All the Ratchet and clank games are awesome full stop.

2016 was great, but it was quite bare compared to the old games. But thats because 2016 is a reboot/remake of the original game/movie tie-in. This meant it didn't have an arena, or many costumes, hover boots, vehicles, alternate wrenches, and guns not quite as interesting as the later games.

That's why my hype for Rift Apart is so high, it's not constrained to being a reboot/remake like 2016 was. It's all brand new, a new story, locations, weapons etc... so the devs have complete freedom to put in whatever they want, which is amazing.

I'm secretly hoping that the female/grey lombax is a multiverse version of Ratchet, and that there's a multiverse Clank in the game too that they haven't shown yet, who may be evil, or perhaps still in captivity by the time controlling Oni that created him. Can't wait!

ID: grnik15

All of them? You obviously haven't played All 4 One...

4 : Anonymous2021/03/20 20:40 ID: grml9uo

Why, god, why we cant get a 60fps patch for this game 🙁

ID: grmllq1

Yeah, even for 30fps it still feels very sluggish compared to other games

ID: grn4jnb

I didnt even notice it was 30fps, whereas Spiderman really bugged me at 30.

Weird.

ID: grn49j9

I found the opposite. I'm always after 60fps whenever it is available, and built a pc to play multiplat games on for a guaranteed 60fps, but Ratchet and Clank was one I felt was more bearable. Not great, but insomniac made good use of the motion blur in this game.

ID: grnhigd

yeah i tried playing it but as much as the game looked good i cant stand 30fps

5 : Anonymous2021/03/20 20:58 ID: grmnv04

I would chew my left leg off for a remaster of each game for PS5. I'd accept a broken foot for the ports.

ID: grmpj4e

I'd do literally nothing for PS3 emulation so I could play the ones I missed. I just feel entitled to it.

ID: grmqp2y

Does RPCS3 not run it? I played Skate 3 on it, and was able to fully complete it.

6 : Anonymous2021/03/20 20:37 ID: grmkxh5

You should definitely give No. 2, No. 3, and Crack in Time a try. But yeah this one is a lot of fun and a visual delight.

7 : Anonymous2021/03/20 20:11 ID: grmhe9e

Yeah I love it and I regret not playing the PS3 games when I still had one

8 : Anonymous2021/03/20 20:41 ID: grmlidj

I platinumed it last week. It was really fun.

9 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:17 ID: grn6vhb

Man, what I wouldn’t give for a remaster of Up Your Arsenal or Deadlocked

ID: grnc41y

Up Your Arsenal is probably my fav.

10 : Anonymous2021/03/20 22:43 ID: grn29j7

30fps is a bummer tho

11 : Anonymous2021/03/20 21:31 ID: grmscoa

It's definitely a good game, but compared to others in the series it's lacking as its only a "half game" remake of the original and has that weird movie tie in stuff going. It's still quite enjoyable and worth anyone's time.

In my eyes A Crack in Time is the perfect Ratchet game and has the most innovation, followed by Tools of Destruction then Going Commando. This isn't to say the ones I didn't mention are terrible, there's only 2 or 3 that are bad. If you have a PS3 then you can play almost the entire series and it's worth playing every one.

12 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:01 ID: grn4qvt

R&C 2016 is one of my favorite PS4 games. I got it at Best Buy when it came out, thinking it could be a fun game to keep me entertained for a bit, but damn was I wrong. I loved it so much, I got all of the achievements and beat it AT LEAST 7 times haha

13 : Anonymous2021/03/20 22:22 ID: grmzfq9

I had high expectations for this game but found it so hard to follow and just stopped playing, I guess that's partly because they tried to tie it in with the movie.

ID: grn8fll

Same. Very confusing and frankly quite boring. Personally I think it's the most overrated PS4 game ever. There's a great video that goes deep into why it feels so off. I've never played the originals yet I knew from the first cutscene something was wrong in this game.

14 : Anonymous2021/03/20 20:12 ID: grmhifc

Love the game.

15 : Anonymous2021/03/20 21:23 ID: grmralz

PS4 games running on a PS5 can take some advantage of the SSD to shorten loading times, not that much quicker than playing on PS4 but still noticeable. Only native PS5 games can use it to the full potential though.

But due to the small size of the SSD keep all my PS4 games on and external HDD to free up space for all my PS5 games! Hopefully in the summer they will enable the expanded storage but even then the prices for compatible SSD’s is going to be pretty high!

16 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:37 ID: grn9es3

Have they announced a release date for Rift Apart?

ID: grnatty

June 11

ID: grnb3of

June 11th

17 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:46 ID: grnahjy

I replayed it a few weeks ago even though I've already platinumed it, just because I needed that R&C Fix because I can't touch Rift Apart yet

A damn great game. Not the best in the franchise imo (I'd, like many, say that's A Crack In Time) but solid and absolutely gorgeous

18 : Anonymous2021/03/20 21:38 ID: grmtcvv

It was alright at best. Easily the worse in the franchise.

19 : Anonymous2021/03/20 21:51 ID: grmv36u

I got it on day one and it's fun but.. not up to the franchise standard. Looks amazing, ran well, and plays well. But it's basically a movie tie in-game, so a lot of the charm is gone there. No soundtrack to speak off, shoe horned in movie cut scenes, and the game was so easy compared to the older ones.

20 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:35 ID: grn97e1

It's an insult to the original.

21 : Anonymous2021/03/20 21:53 ID: grmvewj

It’s fun as a game but sucks thematically and characteristically compared to the earlier games

22 : Anonymous2021/03/20 22:59 ID: grn4ew7

It feels very choppy for me though. This is my first Playstation coming from a PC gamer. Is this just the 30FPS because jeez it feels laggy almost to me.

23 : Anonymous2021/03/20 21:05 ID: grmotwk

It really is a great game just wish it was a bit longer

24 : Anonymous2021/03/20 21:22 ID: grmr2fz

yea i cant wait to play it when i get my ps5, looking forward to the new ratchet and clank cause the loading times look amazing

25 : Anonymous2021/03/20 22:45 ID: grn2icr

Oh boy, if you thought Ratchet & Clank (2016) was awesome.. I think you would LOVE this PS2 ones and maybe even the PS3 ones.

Oddly enough, the older you go the more you will like the characters. R&C 2016 is actually a very much watered down version of the main characters and story.. it's actually a "reboot" of the first game but takes a different direction not to many people were happy with.

Trust me, go try out like.. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. I think you will really like that one, it's my favorite in the series and quite literally one of my favorite games of all time.

26 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:13 ID: grn6bpz

I don't know which version I'm currently playing (whichever one was free on PS4 for the play at home thing) but I'm really enjoying it.

27 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:14 ID: grn6g0q

I played this a couple of weeks ago and it has inspired me to dig out my PS3 to replay A Crack In Time and Nexus in time for the new one. They are such great games, just a blast to play and the writing and acting is about as good as it gets.

28 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:27 ID: grn87gt

I just started this one today. First Ratchet and Clank Game. Right now I am not too intrigued but hopefully I will get more interested. I am going to go for the platinum once I finish the story.

29 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:28 ID: grn8dms

Yes it was. Didn't play it until the PS5 and it was simply solid. I'll for sure get rift. The plan they had by giving it for free succeeded.

30 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:44 ID: grna8o8

The only thing that disappoints me is that it use quiet. I just came off of AstroTurf with all the vibrations and such, I know it is an older game, but I thought maybe they patched in some stuff for the controller. Welp, the sequel will probably make use of this

31 : Anonymous2021/03/20 23:48 ID: grnank1

Yeah I've been going through the ps plus collection on ps5 and this is one that I've finished. Decent game, definitely made more enjoyable by the ps5s ssd and rapid load times. The only negative for me really was the collectible card side quest thingy, didn't add much to the game if I'm honest
