Do you have to play other yakuza games to enjoy this one?
ID: gsl50m4No you can enjoy this one just fine without playing the others.
ID: gsl6uaoYakuza: Like a Dragon is sort of like a reboot of the Yakuza series, since the main character has changed from Kiryu who's story ended in Yakuza 6. There are recurring characters from the past games in Yakuza: Like a Dragon, but you can play this as a standalone title without knowing the contents of the past games.
ID: gsl5epxThis is way different than previous Yakuza games in both gameplay and tone (turn based JRPG and more wacky), you don't need to play the previous games but they give you better context for story points down the line.
But it's the first game from a new character, so you can go blind into this one.
ID: gslcdeeWait, this one is more wacky than the older games?
ID: gsl9kbzThis was my first Yakuza game and I loved it. I just started playing the other games in the series because I fell in love with the world and style of story-telling.
ID: gsl75bjI don't really enjoy the Yakuza games but loved this one. It's relatively standalone, there are some connected threads to previous entries but I was able to understand with Google catch up or two. I will say you will likely only like this one if you like J/RPGs though
ID: gslb393Nope, but there is some fan service close to the end that I find excessive. I assume someone that starts at yakuza 7 will feel like they are missing out some context. Its a minor complaint and you can definitely start with this one anyway.
ID: gslvpjdnot really but it there are some parts of the story that will reference the past games without spoiling it. I was never a fan of the previous Yakuza games and thought that having a turn based battle system on Like a Dragon would be weird... but it turns out that this is one the my favorite RPGs. Either way you will love this game
ID: gslh7grNot at all. Play it.
ID: gslwfz1I’ve never played a Yakuza game before this one. It is incredible. Rich story lines, deep characters, everything.... There is so much in this game. It’s my game of the year.
ID: gsmp4d1I'm curious, as someone who didn't play the previous games, how did you feel about the returning characters, i.e Kiryu, Majima, Saejima, Dojima, Sera etc? Lol. Because honestly even though you can totally play 7 without playing the other ones, those later chapters were pretty full of references to previous games and i cannot imagine what it was like to play through that without knowing who everyone was, their pasts, history etc.
ID: gsm5evmI'm playing this as my first Yakuza game right now and just earlier got to a later-game event that seemed pretty heavy on referencing prior series canon. Didn't impact my enjoyment of the game at all; if anything I just want to go back and check out the older games at some point for the backstory.

Fantastic game, as good as Yakuza 0.
This is both a love letter to JRPG games and a JRPG for people that doesn't like JRPGs. It's a solid game all around, can't recommend it enough.
-
I love the current trend of either a 60fps performance mode or high resolution mode in games this generation. This way everyone is happy and can change modes based on their own preference.
ID: gsohognWell right now, yes. Because these are cross-gen titles. Of course optimization is a thing and if you develop exclusively for PS5 developers can do better with it. But it does worry me to see some of these FPS drops in cross-gen titles on the PS5.
Because these games look nowhere near what exclusives are gonna be able to do.
If God of War is a exclusive current-gen title then I'd just be very curious if they target 60 fps and how good it looks.

ID: gslsy6fYou! Congratulations
ID: gslve63Have my free award.
ID: gsm05luGoddamnit I wanted to win 🙁
You made me laugh tho, nice comment

ID: gsl3waqwith worse shadows on SX id argue the ps5 is 0.25 inches longer this time
-
I'm pissed they couldnt even add in save transfers from ps4 to ps5....now I have to restart all over...I already had so much in it...now I'm back to being a bum lmao literally
-
Haha I still remember when people were trashing ps5 for being lower teraflops. Now almost all games are performing the same as xbox series x. Sometimes ps5 even has an advantage.. It is more than I expected.
ID: gsl2ej1That's why we don't play video games on paper
ID: gsl9f8qTell that to my friend who created his own Pokemon tabletop game.
ID: gsmzlwnI don't even care if the Xbox Series X had 3 times better graphics than the PS5, I still prefer the PS5 for the controller alone.
ID: gslswbnAs it turns out, cache bandwidth and clock speed is more important than people originally thought.
-
I never actually watch these videos, I just look at the comments whenever they're posted. I don't even care which one performs better, I just like watching the mudslinging. lol
ID: gsmxigeThat's the worst take.
Digital Foundry is easily my favorite channel on Youtube. It's never about "which console is better". It's a deep breakdown into how games work. They'll dive deep into the tech, how it differs from game to game, and how each game will take advantage of various hardware.
The few internet trolls/fanboy reactions to these videos is the worst part.
ID: gsobspqThis is true. It is quite cool to look at it
-
I was thinking of getting the Series S as my first ever Xbox purchase, just to see what its like, their whole ecosystem, game pass etc as it does look interesting. But damn, it really is a step down even at $300. I don't want to spend another $500 for a machine that runs pretty much identical to the PS5 but doesn't have as good a game selection (imo) even if there is more selection on game pass.
-
It's like he was scared to say the shadows looked better on ps5, even I could tell the difference.
-
Colors on PS5 are better
Shadows too
ID: gsluudbThat difference in color is down to different gamma settings, that’s not one being “better” than the other.
Shadows are a tough call, the PS5’s are darker but the XSX’s have smoother filtering. Imo, the shadow from the sign looks better on PS5, but the shadow from the awning looks better on XSX.
ID: gsljjnzYup kind of odd how they didn't point that out
ID: gslrcwdThey said the gamma was different along with pointing out the shadows. It's hard to say one gamma is better than the other since you'd need to know what the developers intent was.
ID: gsm2serYeah it’s really just down to the gamma, it’s not clearly better on one or the other to the point where they should bother putting themselves out there to make that declaration. There is no real way to make an objective decision in this case.
PS5 and XSX have different implementations of HDR, SDR, etc. A lot of PS5 games have had issues with crushed blacks (see Control for example). This looks like a case where the black level is lower so shadows in the scenes are darker, which is the main difference between the two screenshots. It’s hard to say which is better without knowing the true intention. And even then, it could just come down to preference!

Looks great cant wait.

Any certain game to start the yakuza games? People always talk about them so I wanna try them out sometime.
ID: gsm9g52Yakuza 0 for me, both the chronological start of the series and probably my personal fave wrt setting, characters and feel. Yakuza 7/Like a Dragon is probably also a decent starting point, just because the gameplay is so different from all the others?
ID: gsqmkk8Yakuza 0 is usually the recommended starting point but 0-6 feature an entirely different cast than 7 and the stories aren’t directly connected. They’re all pretty similar as far as the gameplay loop of exploring and doing side quests and developing relationships with NPCs and playing mini games and everything, but 0-6 have action beat em up style combat and 7 goes full classic turn based jRPG.
Basically, you can start with 7 if you want, it doesn’t have any significant direct connections story/character wise with the earlier games and has different combat but still has all of the flavor. Otherwise, try out 0 and if it clicks for you then you have hundreds and hundreds of hours of new games to play.

GOTY 2020
-
Came here to say that this is my favorite RPG since FFVII (the original released in the 90s). Easily a frontrunner for GOTY 2021. Would have won 2020 if not for TLOU2 and Tsushima.
-
Both systems are good. I just cant wait for fucking true next gen games!!! LFG!
-
Demon’s souls
-
Eh, to be fair, Demon Souls had the graphics but the game was the same. There were no next gen mechanics or anything. So it's half way there but we still haven't had a fully next gen game yet.
-
I thought I could've beat it before this came out but I didn't. So now I'm about 20-30 hours in the game with no way to transfer save and absolutely not starting over. Looks like I gotta wait a couple years to play it again lol
-
Why do the shadows look so different even though they're both the same?
-
Different implementation due to the graphics API or a bug.
-
City scenes don't look that off compared to what CP77 ambitiously tried to achieve, yet it perform miles better and with lines and textures looking that much cleaner.
-
That's not remotely true, at least on PC. Cyberpunk is legitimately next gen on PC maxed out with RT. No other current game comes close. Maybe on console these look similar but Cyberpunk is absolutely mind-blowing if you can see it in person maxed out.
-
I have an RTX 3080 and some 130h logged into CP77, no need to imagine what the game looks like maxed out.
What I'm saying is that, you can turn all low and make the game look like shit, and it will still run like a turd like it does on consoles, yet this game, comparatevily looks sharp, city looks alive and crowded, neon sights need no RT to be immersive, and it sill hits a performance target above and beyond CP, be it on consoles or mid end hardware.
-
I just want cross save so I can pick up where I left off on my PS4....
-
Is nobody else experiencing lots of crashing?
Edit on ps5
-
The bottom line is that parity wins out here and you can't go wrong on either console. Anyone expecting SEGA to give an advantage to either console will be disappointed.
-
I wonder what graphical differences they are going to ignore this time? Last video they did (Avengers) totally ignored the PS5's superior lighting and shadows...DF sucks.
-
I'm excited for the ps5 pro next year!
-
Next yeah uhhu
-
It's way too soon to even compare graphics when multiple developers have commented that it's nearly impossible to optimize right now for next gen. They are making these games for the Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Playstation 4, Playstation 4 PRO, PS5, Xbox Series S/X. We won't know what will perform better for another year at least

1440p 60fps performance mode
Native 4k 30fps resolution mode
Both are a solid 30 or 60fps most of the time, but can drop a bit when doing big moves.
