[HUB] Ryzen 7 5800U Review, AMD Retakes Ultrathin Performance Throne

Turns out the old 'moar corez' meme really did the trick for AMD's mobile lineup, the 11th gen i7s are getting dunked on hard.

Unfortunate about the mixing in of Zen 2 cores into the 5000 series though. Rebrands are not much fun.

Watch the review. At 15w zen2 and zen3 are the same in Multithrraded workloads. At 45w gap is bigger. Using zen2 for U series is logical.

ID: guq9ido

And the same for gaming- no difference, Zen2 or Zen3, if you are iGPU and bandwidth limited.

ID: guql98l

Right but Zen 2 had some cases where Intel was ahead by a nice margin, Zen 3 removed those cases almost completely, so the performance is more consistent in every workload.

ID: gur7aiv

Sure, but then dont call it 5xxx. Like AMD 3150C (zen1 14nm), it’s deceiving

ID: guq94u8

Intel being stubborn on adding more cores to their mobile lineups is just painful to watch as well.

2C4T for M/U series CPU from 2010(1st gen) to 2017(7th gen KBL), only select QM/HQ models get quad core treatment. Finally upgraded U series i5 and i7 to 4C8T at 8th gen CFL. But i3 kept that sweet sweet 2C4T tradition well into 11th gen.

They can't increase the cores, just look at how much power they use. It would be a disaster for mobile.

ID: guqjdkh

They are not just rebrands, they up the clock speed and they also re enabled features that were disabled in renior.

ID: gus50hm

And their power consumption is significantly improved in a lot of scenarios.

Lucienne's there because oems want a drop in chip refresh on the same chassis. Amd also found that the 4000 sku with smt disabled ain't too popular

ID: guqjijl

To bad 90% of all renior laptops that had U processors used ones with smt disabled.

ID: guqjmsj

I’ve been waiting for HP to refresh the envy line with Lucienne and Cezanne. I really don’t want a 4700U because it has no SMT

what 5800U laptops are actually available for sale (no coming soonTM bs)? i know of 1 hp elitebook but thats it

ID: guq3ti4

Here in Germany there are 6 Cezanne-U HP ProBook x360 models listed, 2 of them in stock (one with 5600U, one with 5800U).

ID: guratxz

AMD should forbid using its superior CPUs with goddamn 250 nit screens, what THE HELL were you thinking, HP????!?!?

ID: gur5zj4

but all are low spec models, 250cd screens... ewww
and availability even for 4000U devices is still just basically non existent.

ID: guq1xlw

Every single Zen 3 (and 2) laptop is egregiously overpriced right now.

4c/8t 11th gen Intel laptops are $500-600 while 6c/6t Ryzen laptops are $750-900. 6c/12t Zen "3" laptops are at $1100-1200.

ID: gupug19

Do you even watch the video? They use an asus zenbook13.

ID: gupvca7

Which only seems to exist in reviews.

I can't find it for sale anywhere.

Amazon has no models of any brand with a 5800U

Nor does newegg.

So to parents question, no 5800U laptops are "actually available for sale"

ID: gupuqu6

is that thing available? They also used the XMG Apex 15 for the 3070m and 5900HX review. It isnt actually available to buy to this date.

My 2700u is definitely getting long in the tooth, but I still am waiting for a navi igpu. These laptops aren't even 2x as fast as my vega 11 in benchmarks, even with much faster memory and clocks.

I'm pretty fine with 4750u on my T14s. That 5800u would be a nice upgrade though.

the meagre MT perf improvement......

ID: guqeyx3

They're getting heavily bottlenecked by memory. DDR5 can't come soon enough.

ID: gusfw58

Nah, double cache eats up some power. IPC gains get brought down by lower all around clocks...

And people thought that AMD could only compete with advantage of TSMC, here it is against the best node and architecture that Intel has, that give hopes that AMD would remain competitive because they take a more architectural approach as Lisa Su said.

9 : Anonymous2021/04/16 15:52 ID: guqjg0d

I'd like to see 5800U CPU paired with rx6800m dGPU at 5nm for low power gaming laptop.

10 : Anonymous2021/04/16 15:55 ID: guqjtm0

With a node shrink and an iGPU upgrade to Navi in the next 1-2yrs, I see a very bright future for AMD Laptops ahead 🙂

11 : Anonymous2021/04/16 19:29 ID: gurd3z4

So where can I buy a 5800u?

Looking at Newegg, Amazon, Best Buy the Intel Tiger Lake part is available in plenty of laptops.

Not a single 5800u laptop is available for purchase. Not just out of stock, just not available in a single model. More paper launch products from AMD. Intel doesn't need to match AMD when they are outselling AMD on the simple basis of availability.

12 : Anonymous2021/04/16 22:39 ID: gus1bic

Shame about the iGPU, Vega 11 or RDNA would be nice to see. Memory speed bottleneck is not an excuse when Intel can have better iGPU performance with the same memory speed.

How do you retake a throne you never lost? Intel has been losing since Zen+.
