- Returnal on PS5 - 11 Things You Need To Know
-
Did they say if if there will be difficulty options?
ID: guqeiqsID: guqzm2nI think you're right about there being a path to encounter the boss and a path to skip them. I thought the trailer said the door to the next level stays open permanently, but didn't say anything about the boss not coming back.
ID: guptt48I am hoping that there will be difficulty levels, but roguelikes tend not to have difficulty levels, but this could always go against type.
ID: guq52jqApparently not according to the developers. Though they said that you can very much decide for yourself how difficult you want to make it for yourself. Also I suspect that the game gets easier over time the more upgrades you unlock.
My guess is that there's probably a risk-reward trade off at play here. Take the safe route or take a short cut that is blocked by a hard boss. Take a detour to grab more upgrades or just push ahead. And so on and so forth.
ID: guqiaa3Hades has a cool option called God Mode, which just gives you a defense buff that goes up every time you die. I think that's a pretty good compromise for people who want easier games vs devs that don't want to compromise on, what would you call it, game balance?
ID: guptyv0Last I heard there's only one difficulty. That's the only thing holding me back from preordering, gotta wait and see how bad other folks get their asses kicked first I guess.
ID: gurfzw5Nah just get it. Games with only one difficulty have the best balance.
ID: guqcp35Challenge yourself buddy, you don’t need an easy mode crutch. I believe in you!

“...PS5’s 3D Audio, if you have a compatible headset...”
All headsets are compatible!
Why do game journalists still think that you need specific compatible headsets for 3D Audio!!
ID: guq9jcjWhy do game journalists still think that you need specific compatible headsets for 3D Audio!!
Just to nitpick, but Playstation Access aren't journalists, they're a part of Playstation UK.
ID: guq9pxdI didn’t know that.
But I was kind of speaking in general as there have been a lot of game journalists that have said the same thing
ID: guq8rkeYea but you cannot use just any headset w Sony I think they mean more like compatible w the system itself. You ever try plugging those old iPod headphones into the ps4 and get the ambulance noises I’m assuming it’s something like that w other headphones but yea the wording is a little off
ID: guq9eb3I get that you can’t use all headsets, like headsets that need an optical port, but the wording makes it seem like you need specific headsets to make use of 3D Audio, like Sony’s Pulse 3D headset.
There are workarounds to get optical headsets to work like this method here
ID: gupsqc2Yeah lots of people still think that, hell, I saw a tech shop tell people you need the ps5 headset for 3D audio lol.
What you reckon ‘bout Returnal btw? I don’t play much roguelikes but it looks good.
ID: gupt5yfSo many gaming sites get stuff wrong with the PS5...don’t even get me started on the articles claiming that God of War and TLoU2 on PS4 have haptics and triggers!
Returnal really intrigues me, I am not a fan of Housemarques other bullet hell style games as they look way too overwhelming, but this looks different and really cool...although still a little overwhelming!
I won’t get this on day one but might grab it on sale at some point!
ID: guru9wfLooks like a lot of fun. Hoping to get a similar rush from it like I do Doom Eternal
ID: guq372lBecause even on sony's public website they mention "Tempest 3D AudioTech on compatible headphones"
ID: guq5xd5Now that I think about it, that phrasing by Sony might have to do with the fact that you can't just hook up Bluetooth headphones to your PS5.
ID: guq3q5qIt’s still not the case though and is misleading as any pair of headphones can take advantage of the Tempest Engine 3D audio.
“On the PS5, you’ll be able to experience 3D Audio with the headphones that many of you already own, either through USB connection to the console, or by plugging your headphones into the DualSense wireless controller’s 3.5mm headset jack.”

Fuck I wish I had a PS5 now. I fell in love with Hades and loved Resogun back when PS4 had barely any games on it.
Everyone complains AAA games don't take risks then something like this comes out and people are afraid to buy it, but would buy the next shitty copy and paste open world full of bandit camps and collectables without hesitation.

What a strange thumbnail...
ID: gurtbmsWhy I can't even bother browsing YouTube anymore. Idk when this thumbnail format became standardized , but I hate it.
-
Looks like a pure Adrenaline ride, this is a real sleeper hit imo. I’m especially exited for the discovery of the planet and its flora, gameplay gonna be rock solid as usual for housemarque games... Tentacle tech looks really impressive btw!
ID: guqfb2pAgreed looks amazing. Day 1 buy from me (pending good reviews of course)

Heterochromia is the new "Blue hair" for protagonists this year.
ID: guqi3mdThe biological "holds up spork"

Anyone else confused yet intrigued by this game? I’m still not sure if its a day one pick up or a hard pass in general for me.
ID: guq04yzIt is a roguelike. This genre is usually dominated by AA/indie games, and AAA games usually incorporate roguelike elements via a couple of mechanics or via entire gamemodes from expansions.
Returnal however, is a roguelike TPS with an AAA budget right from the get go. That’s why many casual gamers struggle to understand what this game is all about, because casual gamers don’t play indie titles, and especially indie titles in the roguelike genre.
You should look into this genre, some of the most engaging gaming experiences come from roguelikes, as they offer insane replayability!
ID: guq8u66This guy games. Some of the best games I’ve played lately have been from this Genre.
Check out Dead Cells, Child of Morta, Hades, Enter the Gungeon, Risk of Rain(and Risk of Rain 2), Slay the Spire....
Dead Cells, Child of Morta are just in a league of their own for me... ssssssooooooooo gooooooood.
ID: guqhn9gYeah, the genre actually has a bunch of games that have amazing reviews, but they're also really inexpensive.
It's ballsy coming into the genre with the most expensive title ever sold for it. They're basically saying their game is way, way better than every other game in the genre with that price.
ID: guqe66jI’m just gonna wait for reviews and maybe watch a bit more gameplay once it’s out, and then I’ll decide. I don’t really understand the whole...”rogue-like” thing, or whatever, and how it’ll actually make the game feel to play
ID: guqrt83you know super mario bros. from the NES?
ok thats it
you play until you die and if you die you start over
some games let you restart with some upgrades you have collected others make you start with empty hands again
and the levels change every time you play so every run is different as you will find different things
ID: guqak4tNot gonna be a day 1 purchase for me but I do look forward to playing it
ID: guptgj4I think mostly remains to be seen. Either way, I have NEVER paid $70 for a roguelike... although this definitely seems to be the most technically impressive roguelike ever so it’s very far from an indie title like my two favorites Deadcells or Rogue Legacy. I think their biggest challenge from the start has been how do they justify the $70 to people. Otherwise it’s like going to be wait for a big sale or even for it to be a PSPlus title for most.
ID: guqafaaI have NEVER paid $70 for a roguelike...
me either, though If i take a moment and think about things, roguelikes usually give me huge amounts of value and playtime, maybe we should be paying $70 for something I'll potentially be playing for hundreds of hours and keep coming back to for a decade (if other Roguelikes are anything to come by)...
ID: gupu7smI never played a roguelike game and if I did I didn’t know it was classified by that lol. But I agree with you. Probably will be on PSPlus within the next year so I’ll wait. Really only considered it for content purposes on my YouTube channel but the fact that Resident Evil 8 is one of my most anticipated games of the year and it comes out 7 days after this I think I’ll just skip it. Thanks for you input!
ID: guqi0r0Yeah, other games in the genre have absolutely fantastic reviews.
With a $70 price tag they're either the best game ever released in the genre by far, or the biggest disappointment and worst value in the genre lol
Like you could fill out a Steam library with a handful of the best examples of the genre for the price, or subscribe for like half a year of game pass including roguelikes and hundreds of other games for the price.
tl;dr: Expensive game better be worth the price
ID: gur0jk09 out of the last 10 games I bought were roguelites and I'm still on the fence about this because there's a chance it caves too much to gamers of other genres and misses what's great about roguelites. It needs to have a HUGE variety in weapons/abilities and be difficult. Here's to hoping it's awesome.
ID: guprt0eIt's single player only so I'll probably wait for sale but I am excited
-
Very much looking forward to this. It seems to play like Ratchet & Clank combined with Earth Defense Force. That is a combo with some serious potential.
ID: guq65rhThat's a comparison I haven't seen before lol.
I personally get "Doom Eternal but 3rd person" and "Alien" vibes. If the gameplay is as tight as their previous games this could be really good
ID: guq6byjCan you dodge and fly around like that in Doom or Alien? That's what reminds me of EDF and Ratchet. It's an anti-cover shooter.
-
A haven't give a damn about this game since it was announced till I saw the gameplay. Since I'm still on Outriders (without issues since last Saturday) it won't be a day one pick but i will getting it in the near future.
ID: gupv25cSame. Looks fun as hell, so I'll definitely buy it at some point.
-
I'm so hyped
-
Is this game any similar to risk of rain 2?

I’m still very interested but still no one can say how long it is. I know the genre might make that fluctuate but a range would be nice to hear.
ID: guscbnuCurious, how long should Returnal be to justify the $70 price tag? Since it’s rouge-like, I’m expecting a lot of replay-ability but from what I’m expecting (no sources) it’ll probably be a 13-20 hour base game. Then the aspect of replaying the levels over and over can exceed well past 100 hours if one was really devoted to the game/level designs.
I mean like, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will probably be a 15 hour campaign game with very little replay-ability other than going for completionist and people will still buy that for $70.

The trailer mentions that bosses don't come back after you defeat them, which would be a huge help for people who struggle with these kinds of games. Maybe there's an optional path that lets you rematch with bosses you've already defeated for additional rewards or something, just speculating.
