Sony To Invest An Additional $183m Into PlayStation Exclusives Over The Next Year
2 : Anonymous2021/04/28 10:02 ID: gw5lqzw

"We intend to increase development personnel and other in-house costs by approximately ¥20 billion ($183 million) year-on-year, as we further strengthen our in-house software," Totoki revealed.

Every PlayStation studio going to have at least two teams. Makes better sense too for crunch time.

ID: gw63yju

Not every studio is fit for a two team or multiple team setup. Expanding studios into multiple teams is not a simple thing, and can run the risk of fucking up the culture of said studio that has been hard earned over many years.

As such, Sony will only do this for studios that are willing to expand in such a way.

ID: gw6dmw1

Yeah the titles is misleading, this is not the games budget, it's to expand the studios they have, basically hiring new people (and the material and such for them). If you count 100k$ per developer, that's 1800 additional workers in Sony first-party studios.

As budgets of their productions, I have found only that they will invest 30 billions into content production accross all Sony divisions for the next 3 years (so music, TV, movies, anime and such are also counted but Playstation probably has a decent share of it)

3 : Anonymous2021/04/28 11:10 ID: gw5qj6t

This generation is going to be something special. An almost $200mil increase on spending for 1st party titles. Plus over $300mil in spending for 3rd party investments. I really can’t wait to see what comes out in the next few years.

4 : Anonymous2021/04/28 10:03 ID: gw5lumq

This could be a significant amount if it does not include marketing and just includes development.

ID: gw5sds2

They said it's for "development personnel and other in-house costs" so this is more about hiring more developers, upgrading offices, stuff like that, not game budgets.

ID: gw6730v

The vast majority of a games budget outside of marketing is the developers salary.

So this is a good sign.

5 : Anonymous2021/04/28 13:17 ID: gw62xke

And there's OnePlus investing $150m into HasselBlad

6 : Anonymous2021/04/28 11:45 ID: gw5thfd

I wish we got a new infamous game

ID: gw76osz

now imagine if we got a Venom game in the same style as infamous and Prototype

7 : Anonymous2021/04/28 10:33 ID: gw5nu41

I would love to see them do more with their spider man IP. Spider Gwen game and a Venom/Carnage game would sell a ton.

ID: gw5oxj5

I would definitely buy a Venom game.. I just want to fuck shit up

ID: gw64ua6

Dude we need a game like Prototype this gen where you go around fucking everything up, including humans. A venom game fits that bill perfectly.

ID: gw66a3g

I am apprehensive of a Venom game. If it was built like Prototype it could work great but there's always the worry they'll turn it into a 'misunderstood outcast' type deal so he doesn't seem too violent.

ID: gw5v4gf

The next Spiderman will have Venom as one of the main characters

ID: gw5tl91

I just want Spider-Man 2! Those games are so damn good.

ID: gw5wg39

I would love a Spiderverse game with all the variations of Spider-Man, with the same comic book style as a Viewtiful Joe

ID: gw63q1o

I would be so happy if we got more games on the scale of Miles Morales between each of the big Spider-Man games.

So after SM2, give us Spider-Gwen, the after 3, we get 2099 or Noir. Or whatever spin offs they do. Basically just use the updated engine from Spider-Man, tweak New York up a bit (Gwen is from a different universe, so lots of fun changes there, and Noir is from the 30's, so you could really go nuts with retro Nee York).

ID: gw5p5k6

I would buy a venom game but wasn't the recent Venom movie a bit of a failure? (Personally I loved the movie)

ID: gw5pgch

Financial failure no, critical failure I guess?

Its a guilty pleasure of mine too, I mean they're making a sequel so it would make sense to make a game if that movie is successful?

8 : Anonymous2021/04/28 13:36 ID: gw653xg

I hope we can get some AAA 1st party survival game : (

9 : Anonymous2021/04/28 13:37 ID: gw657n5

How much does it take to make an uncharted 4 level game etc?

I'm sure I seen something around £50m but could be very wrong

ID: gw6bdbn

We can't know for sure because who knows how much their buildings cost or utilities are or how much each person is paid.

But I would wager the total cost per dev is like $120,000 per year.

So if it takes 100 people to make uncharted in 4 years I would wager it cost around 48million. Not including marketing.

10 : Anonymous2021/04/28 09:58 ID: gw5lhy6

So about 2-3 AAA games

ID: gw5meuw

It's to hire more devs and other costs associated with increasing the size of studios.

ID: gw5paq8

My read is that they are intending to add the $183m to their yearly "development personnel and other in-house costs". So hiring a lot more people etc.

ID: gw5luaq

As its additional budget, 2-3 Extra exclusives or Giving more budget for even bigger games seems pretty good to me.

ID: gw5mqho

I think these investments are meant to extend their first party-studious teams and not necessarily money they plan for game development

ID: gw60p9t

They are, but the number 1 costs for game budgets is personnel, so investing in personnel is technically the same as increasing the game dev budget.

11 : Anonymous2021/04/28 14:29 ID: gw6bwzq

TLOU2 had a budget of 100 million so this is good knowing it’s enough money for multiple AAA games.

12 : Anonymous2021/04/28 10:35 ID: gw5nzlz

That's an additional $183m, not their total budget, so expect 2-3 extra exclusives and maybe a few smaller titles (looking at you ASOBI and the Astrobot IP)

13 : Anonymous2021/04/28 12:00 ID: gw5utig

I still hope they pull the trigger on acquiring Housemarque and Blue Point

ID: gw5vsl2

How they not have already acquired Blue Point is beyond me. That has to be in the cards, right? Housemarque is another one

ID: gw66e6h

Not every studio wants to be bought.

ID: gw5zh1b

Why? They already support them, and they aren't taken off the market, so if Housemarque wants to make something smaller for pc there's nothing stopping them.

Making the switch from Xbox one to Ps4 was my best choice. There’s so many better quality games and endless replay ability. PS5 is just another level especially with the duelsense. Very happy to read this.

15 : Anonymous2021/04/28 11:53 ID: gw5u80t

This is what I love about Sony.

Not slating XSX at all, this is what I hear from my friends who have them, but it seems that the most enjoyable aspect is playing all the old games.

I personally want new games to experience, so this news is fantastic in my opinion.

ID: gw6kyop

but it seems that the most enjoyable aspect is playing all the old games.

I mean that’s the case now but they definitely will be releasing a lot of new titles over the generation. They have a ton of developers.

ID: gw6eurp

Xbox also has new exclusives, they got 23 studios, all of those will do new games too. For now, neither PS5 or XSX has much because it's early in the gen

ID: gw639cc

A huge appeal of Xbox is obviously Game Pass, which, if you like to mess around and experiment with a ton of different games, is great value.

16 : Anonymous2021/04/28 13:04 ID: gw61dbf

I eventually wanna see Insomniac or Naughty Dog’s take on another marvel character.

ID: gw64o47

Just all the Spider-Sonas

ID: gw688gm

Naughty Dog taking on Daredevil or Punisher would make me cum

ID: gw624s6

Iron man next please

ID: gw64art

I keep thinking a Black Panther game by Insomniac would be incredible. Also, a Captain America game by ND would be pretty sick.

17 : Anonymous2021/04/28 12:18 ID: gw5wirp

They’re a Power House Now they just need a real competitor to Game Pass

ID: gw6nq4h

As much as we want that, objectively they don't have a need to. You've seen the, for the lack of a better term, rally towards supporting $70 price tags these recent months, and if they can sell their first party games at that rate, why would they settle for giving them away at $10? The rate at which they release titles (and again, people seemingly happily accepting $70 now, the latter part I don't quite understand) means they make a hell of a lot more within a year of releasing blockbusters that relying on the subscription revenue.

18 : Anonymous2021/04/28 13:21 ID: gw63cuz

I would like to see them do more to let me give them money for a PS5

19 : Anonymous2021/04/28 10:30 ID: gw5nnvw

Me too
