That is quite possibly and partially why the movie blew up. As a movie, it is historically inaccurate and a bit cliche. I think Cameron really just did not give af and wanted permission to legally roam the Titanic wreck using automated submarines. That being said: James Cameron and those he inspired have greatly contributed to the field of observational marine biology.
