I love re but the series to me isn’t very scary the only times I’ve been physically scared was in 8 with the infant and in 2 with mr X the first time

I was just thinking about this question recently! It's not my favorite RE game overall, but I have to agree with the many voices below that RE7 was the most terrifying to me. I remember finally getting the game and settling in to play it at night only to get so creeped out by the slow-burn opening that I just couldn't continue at the time.

Personally I was super creeped out by the claustraphobic darkness of the cruise ship in Revelations 1. The tight corridors with enemies that could slither out of any air duct like a Xenomorph had my hackles up during those sections. And the boss fight with Rachel Foley stayed with me for days after when walking through the dark corridors where I work expecting to hear her whisper and hiss from the darkness.

Res 7. I haven’t finished 1 yet, but so far 7 has been terrifying. Not ashamed to say, I actually turned down the volume as I searched Eveline’s room.... and then her creepy ass feet appeared in the doorway behind me.

Others have said it, but I will second (or actually tenth it 'cause why not) but my vote goes to 7.

RE1 on PS1 kept me awake at night. Always closed my window in case I got the T Virus! I was a kid though to be fair. That “itchy tasty” diary entry was superb. I’d love to see them make a game playing as one of the workers at the mansion when the virus first breaks out. I think that would be a fantastic and terrifying story to tell / play through.

7 due in part for not playing it so much, and the remakes for 1 and 2 are not far
Back in the day, clearly 3. I still have nightmares about Nemesis from time to time, 18/19 years after first experiencing it as a kid

A tie between OG 3 and 7 for me.

In terms of scary, I define that as, I am experiencing so much fear I have to hide my character in this safe place for long periods of time. Maybe every now and then peeking around a corner.
Going off of the above, there's only been 2 resident evil games that have done this to me. Those being, resident evil 7 and remake2. There was a little of this in re6 when playing sherry or jake can't remember which, and you have to hide from the monster that's chasing you.
In terms of jump scares, not a single re game can compete with the original first 2 games. I'm thinking re1 the dogs jumping through the windows, re2 the arms coming through the boarded up windows in the rpd.
